GDT 8/22/22: Braves @ Pirates - Scrubbing the Odor of Odorizzi

There's a fine line between not giving Contreras enough rest by DHing him when he doesn't catch, and not getting him enough PAs based on him being the ~5th best hitter on the team.

Right now I think Snit is resting him too much, but it's likely being done in an attempt to get something going with Rosario.

In the playoffs I expect to see Contreras get almost every single DH PA.

It doesn't help that there is no backup catcher behind Contreras. If Tromp was healthy, that would allow Contreras to DH more regularly.

Snit is probably just being cautious in case anything happens to either TdA or Contreras.

I'm guessing next year the Braves carry all 3 of TDA/Contreras/Pina, and Contreras bats almost everyday.

Haven't been impressed by Odorizzi thus far. Here's hoping that a team like the Pirates will turn him around

More BJ this series. Frenchy is in the Bronx for Mets-Yankees on TBS for Tuesday. Still not sure why Frenchy can't do the Monday game in Pittsburgh and then fly to NY after the game.

He was an improvement over the options they had at the deadline in the sense that they "know" what can be expected of him every five days.

Anderson couldn't throw it in the ocean at that point, everyone's still gunshy about Muller (rightfully so), Elder and the guy they traded for the pen upgrade (Davidson) certainly couldn't be trusted, and Soroka still hadn't thrown a pitch in a game setting.

Odorizzi is one of those veterans who knows how to grind it out and keep you in the game even when he's getting knocked around. In other words, the type of SP several folks wanted to add to the rotation before the season started (and Wright and Strider took off). He'll find a way to get you through at least 4-5 innings even if he "doesn't have it" that day. The other guys were all liable to walk 2 or 3 batters in the first or second innings and have you 5-6 runs down before your hitters all had their first PA. The young guys problem isn't their stuff - it tends to be between their ears when things don't go right out of the gate.

That's the problem Odorizzi solves.

Should only be a brief delay. Fast moving showers with a little bit of thunder. There is still some more upstream but it is also moving very fast and not too scary. Outside shot at one more brief delay but they could choose to not play until that moves through as well.

The rain is almost out of there but the next group of showers/storms is only about 45 mins to an hour away. Still those could easily dissipate into just some fast moving light sprinkles. Really interested to see if they start getting ready to play or not after this first batch moves out.

This Yankees and Mets series is gonna get nasty. Rizzo just told Lindor to “shut the Fck up “.

That’s a lot of words just to say, “Odorizzi will give you 4-5 innings and keep you in every game, plus Anderson needs to iron out his control and repertoire.”
