GDT 8/23/15 @ Cubs; Wisler vs. Hammel

If it was just this year, I'd let it go. Fredi has collapsed this time of year with good and bad teams alike. I detect a pattern

No doubt, and I don't want Fredi around as manager at all going forward. But I'm just saying you can't make chicken salad out of chicken crap, no manager would be able to salvage what we have on the field right now. We are last in runs scored in baseball, and in the bottom 6 in ERA. That's just going to be a horrible team no matter how you slice it.

On a positive note: I was born in 78 so my first experience with the Braves were the 86-90 squads. That turnaround season is so much sweeter after watching some pathetic performances.

On a negative note: I'm accepting the fact that Wisler, Folty, and Banuelos may be the first wave of flipped pitching assets and not the stalwarts I thought they could be.

Wisler knows how to pitch but doesn't have that bulldog mentality or the arsenal.

Yeah, born in 75 and started really watching the Braves in 83 myself. so in the same boat as you really. It's interesting to see the reactions from folks who have never really seen the Braves struggle in their lifetimes. Hopefully we make some good moves this offseason and in next years draft/international signings, cause that's going to determine whether we are down for 2-3 years or 5-6. The returns on our young pitching (outside of Miller) from the tradeoff this offseason are definitely not looking so hot at the moment.

But on the flipside just to add a bit of perspective:
Greg Maddux had an ERA over 5.50 through his first 180+ IP and 32 starts.
Glavine had an ERA close to 5 through his first 240 IP and 40ish starts
Randy Johnson had a 4.82 ERA in his first full season as a starter.

Our young pitchers still have plenty of time to turn it around. Still, they are looking ugly so far.

This team has a lot of fight in it. They'll probably get up off the deck and come roaring back with two or three runs.

Yup. It's working all angles. I'd love to see the kids we have now like Folty, Wisler, and ManBan get it together, but I'm also open to the idea of quantity over quality. There's such a crazy attrition rate with pitching. The Braves in that era lucked out. Sometimes you need to play the odds, but still be patient.

Since were apparently bringing up Christal Beth again, does that mean Lavarnway is out? Not a bad finale, if so.

I wouldn't be shocked if they finally trade AJ if he made it through waivers.

I don't think AJ clearing waivers will be an issue. He isn't seen around the league as well as he is here IMO. No good team will want him starting and his bad defense and personality doesn't make him an ideal back-up.

I've been a Braves fan since their final years in Milwaukee when I was in grade school. Most of that time has been pretty miserable--the early years in Atlanta, the 70s and being picked up on TBS in front of 3500 fans in Fulton County Stadium, regularly flirting with 100 loss seasons in the second half of the 80s, and the last few years. Even the exhilarating times of the early 90s were always tempered by the post season losses. Thank God for 1995.

Who knows if we'll ever even sniff another WS but I can always hope. At least nobody can ever call me a "bandwagon fan."

Probably afraid he'll stink badly and hoping with a little more time they can avoid such a stinky start.

This is true. The casual fan who doesn't see the big picture will make a knee jerk reaction to his production. Those fans still buy tickets.

Im not sure I see the big picture either. We hopefully filled a hole at 3b, but with no mlb experience and injury issues, I'm not sure. We created a hole in our starting rotation by dealing wood, which hopefully we can fill through FA. Even if we do, will the FA be an upgrade over wood? I'm not sold on Peterson to say the least, but we traded a top 50 2b prospect. Then throw in extending fredi and I'm not sure what we're doing. If Olivera bombs, I hate to even think of it...

?@mlbbowman

With this winless 7-game trip, the Braves have now lost 22 of their past 24 road games. They've won 5 of their past 7 at Turner Field.

Olivera hasn't seen extended, meaningful game action in what, a year and a half? It's going take him a while to get back up to speed. I'm sure the FO doesn't want him to look embarrassingly bad in his debut.

Yep, they have already taken quite a bit of criticism for the overpay angle of the trade, if Olivera comes up and stinks it up for the last month or so you'd have an even more unhappy fanbase. Makes sense to only call him up once he's performing in AAA.
