GDT 8/27/22: Braves @ Cardinals - Acuña Overdid It

Bro, it happens.

Case in point: Will Smith was garbage for both July and August last year and then became completely infallible in September and October.

Hopefully it happens again, but iglesias and minter are better. They should have 8th and 9th

After tonight, mchugh, iglesias, minter, and lee are better than Jansen in FIP. I'd use minter, iglesias, and mchugh over Jansen

I am on the Jansen not in high leverage spots. But I hate the ‘closer’ BS. Pitch the guy you want facing certain guys.

I think it might be interesting to see how Jansen has done against better teams. I honestly don’t know but I might look at some game logs out of curiosity.

Jansen wasn’t great tonight but the main thing I’m taking out of this game is the fact Snit acually used his best pitcher in the 7th vs the two best players in the NL.
I’m shocked he actually deployed Iggy and Minter properly.
I still don’t understand how he can use them in a wasted game yesterday and then have to properly use them tonight so they can’t go tomorrow when our worst pitcher is starting but that’s a debate for another day.
I’m just shocked he used them properly tonight lol

I agree with set roles, but snit won't ditch that. Snit also won't make the tough call to move Jansen to 6th-7th even though it needs to happen last night

Regardless of what Jansen did, I knew they were cooked as soon as they had first and second and nobody out in the 8th and failed to score.

Overreaction by me or not, but we probably lost any shot at the division tonight. This was a devastating loss

How has no one learned any lessons from last years postseason run?

Lesson #1: Our best relief pitchers were not our closer, which was an advantage. Snit was able to use them in the highest leverage scenarios possible. If Snit pitched his best relief pitcher as closer, Matzek wouldn’t have been available to shutdown the Dodgers in the 7th.

Lesson #2: There is value in sticking with players when they are struggling. Will Smith was hot garbage for July and August last year (after a really good 1st half). He was able to get himself fixed in time for the playoffs.

Lesson #3: Pitchers have ups and downs. Matzek was pretty mediocre in the first half. Minter was in the minor leagues for much of the season. Jackson was unpitchable against the Dodgers, and filthy against the Astros and Brewers. If you live appearance to appearance, you’ll never trust a relief pitcher.

If you just flip Jansen and minter tonight, we probably win

That way iglesias and minter face the better hitters

not sure why msstate getting **** for pointing out objective facts

Jansen has been mediocre at best for a couple of months. it is what it is

Also worth noting that Jansen got the ground ball. If it’s hit hard at someone, it’s a double play and game over. We’ve lost a few games this year with that kind of crap.

he also (should have) walked the first batter... hit another batter... walked another batter... and walked the game winning run in

Tonight sure. Minter is a better pitcher (there are few better).

I always want my best pitcher free to be able to use in any scenario and not tied to the closer role.

The Dodgers have this exact same situation with Kimbrel. He’s not their best bullpen arm.
