They need an official in the booth during the games and have them use the strike zone box we see on TV during the pitch. If it hits that zone, hit a buzzer to the hip of the umpire behind the plate that alerts him to call a strike....vice versa for a ball.
The umpires can’t manage or handle the human element of the game anymore. They are all different but equally sh*tty.
In all fairness, and as much as I criticize what I perceive as bad umpiring, I thought we had a number of games in Atlanta where the umpiring was at least consistent throughout the game and for both teams.
As far as just calling the superimposed strike zone, I believe it's possible for a ball to be outside the box and still be a strike because it shaves off a front corner of the plate but breaks the beam outside the "box." I don't think the beam is 3-D for the entire depth of the plate. If I'm wrong, I'll gladly stand corrected.
