GDT - 8/29/14 - Marlins at Braves

Craig Kimbrel is the first pitcher in MLB history to record 40+ saves in 4 straight seasons, starting with his rookie campaign. #Braves

You mean starting with his first full season as closer. He was called up in May his rookie year.

We should trade him.

I realize the "conventional wisdom" says you don't give long term contracts/money to a closer but I'm glad we've locked him up for an extended period.

IMO we need to do the same thing with JHey and JUp. While Heyward hasn't been "all that" offensively having his defense in right field is huge. We've already discussed at length why we need to keep JUp in Atlanta for awhile.

He only pitched 20 innings and had rookie eligibility the following year as he won the ROY award.

I can't remember if he lost it on number of days in majors or not. i want to say no because IIRC September doesn't count towards that particular rookie qualification or some BS like that.

I would. There is only so much a 1 inning closer can do. Venters at his best was the only invaluable reliever I ever saw.

This isn't any old close though. People ahven't grasped this yet but Kimbrel could be well on his way to going down as one of the all-time greatest closers.

Giants are up on the Brewers but with the Cards loss the Braves will only be 1 game behind the 2nd WC spot if the Giants hang on. A half game if the Giants lose.

He didn't have enough days on the MLB roster or innings. The September rule saved him on days on the roster.

If anything, Venters' situation should be proof that dominant relievers should be held on to.

I mean, if we were getting Trout or Stanton or someone like that back, then sure. But even though he hasn't quite been himself this year, he's still bailed our ass out of a lot of games. 40 saves out of 71 wins.

I was kidding.

But for the right offer i'd consider it.

And I expect more for Kimbrel than a normal closer. There just isn't a great market for an elite closer right now, it needs to be done mid season when a big market team is desperate. I really like what I saw from Shae Simmons, I think he could do a well above average job at closer for league minimum. I love Kimbrel but paying him around 10% of the budget is not the best idea. I think we should be constantly developing and trading closers when they get.

You might disagree about trading Kimbrel but there is a price you would trade him for. Just a matter of how much.
