GDT 8-29-18.....THE NEWK FROM 20,000 FATHOMS

Down 2-0 early last night; 3-0 tonight. One hard hit ball, a walk and a couple of soft singles. As Enscheff says, though, they all count.

Newcomb just isn't that good. Unless he has his A stuff he's a threat to give up 6+ ER every time out. If he stays in longer than 5, his line is going to look like what we saw from him in the start before Miami.

You can tell with Newk almost immediately if it will be a good night or bad. He is missing up and arm side with fastball so he can't locate it.. Basically he throws and hopes the pitch goes where he aims...

I really don't think the kid is fixable and will always be that guy who gives you two good games then 3 bad..

Those were sequencing runs right there. Flowers and Newcomb were pitching to the Ray's strength during that inning. The Rays are not a power hitting club, and they allowed those guys to dink and dunk those runs in on off-speed pitches. Meanwhile, Newcomb's fastball is above average and more than capable of putting both those guys away with 2 strikes. Some of that has to be on Flowers (or the game plan he is following under that wrist band)

Newk's 93 - 94 FA is not good enough... his 96... yes..
