GDT 8/3: Braves (Newk) vs Dodgers (Wood)

Of course I had to miss the HR (I did watch a replay of it). Ozzie gets another LHP in Conley tomorrow too so maybe he can get hits off of him and have this be a launching pad against both sides for him for the rest of the year.

His LH side swing did look better today though.

It's so awesome to see Ozzie come up, play solid second base defense, take walks and hit his first dinger!

Newk wasn't all over the place last night which is encouraging at least. He missed consistently to the arm side of the plate which hints at him struggling with his release point. The kid is just so raw. The talent is undeniable. If he ever learns how to pitch he'll be overpowering.

I disagree. I think he was consistently missing his spots and sometimes by 3+ inches.

I don't understand why he won't pitch inside to right handed hitters.

I noticed his unwillingness/inability to pitch inside to the righties. He had an 0-2 count in LA in a previous game to Barnes and our catcher gave him a target up and in and he threw it down the middle for a home run. I think young pitchers with poor control are reluctant to pitch inside in general.

I've said that the chances for Sims and Newcomb to make it as starting pitchers is less than 50%. I actually like Sims chances a little bit more.

I still believe in Newk. When you have one plus (potentially plus plus) pitch you have a leg up. But I was very impressed with Sims. The change isn't great but he isn't afraid to throw it in the zone and that to me is half the battle. I was a little dissapointed that Sims sat 90-92.

Really? lol Newk's stuff is so insanely good that I'd say it's a good chance. Now, who knows how good he'll be, but man -- dude has talent.

I love Sims and hope he can make it. His tenacity will help because it starts with your mindset.

I'm not saying he wasn't missing his spots or wasn't missing by a lot. He was. He was missing badly. He was just consistently missing to the arm side. That can be an indication that he was struggling with his release point.

Last night he seemed to have a lot of problems with the mound. Think that it got in his head a bit.

Newk just has to get out of his own way. He is rarely hit hard. Folty has the same control problems, but remember this....he was and is hit HARD when he struggles with control....Newk isn't . If he wouldn't have walked so many dang people , he still may have only given up one run. He gets better control and look out.

I can only hope that he toes the rubber in Atlanta again.

So lets say Newk and Sims do decent and show progress for the rest of the year and preseason. You have a rotation of Folty, Julio, Newk, Sims and probably Gohora. I don't see Medlen in the mix unless one of these guys falter OR Julio is traded. Even if there is a big trade, it would probably bring back a starting pitcher.

Mid/late season next year, you have most likely Touki, Soroka, Wright and maybe Weigel. It's about to get crazy. It's really time next year to trade Julio...no matter what the return. There will just most likely be better, cheaper options (as he will be making more money from here on out). I am pulling for Medlen, but he might have to be a long relief guy.

I just don't think he can keep it physically and mentally together for a long stretch. He should be a nasty high leverage RP.

I was talking about this year. I think Medlen is next in line if someone gets hurt or wears down. We also have a double header against the Mets in September.
