GDT 8/30/21: Braves @ Dodgers - Weird Lineup

Drew Smyly sucks hairy ass and did before Alex signed him for $11M. He could’ve built a nice bullpen with those resources. How he talked himself into thinking Smyly was having a mid-career resurgence off of 28 innings interrupted with an IL stint I will never understand.

sticky stuff effect. He'd likely be our swingman in a playoff pen wouldn't he?

If that is the case then we should be working him into that role. He is not providing us any more benefit as a starter than what Touki can provide. But he could be valuable as a BP weapon. 2 inning max effort guy could be a weapon. But we need to see down the stretch IMO.

I don't disagree.

Lots of folks disappointed in Muller (and rightfully so to some extent), but his performance is basically a cheaper, less experienced version of Smyly. Of course, Muller may have benefited from the "first time through the league" effect so it's not a lock that he would have pitched as well going forward. I imagine the mild infatuation with Smyly for some is that "he won't beat himself" like Muller or Toussaint might. True to an extent, but how beneficial is that when Smyly is auditioning to be the pitcher for Home Run Derby every time he takes the mound.

I harped on the Smyly signing early, but came to accept it. That said, he's basically become a piggy-back pitcher. There's value in that in the way the game is played now and I will be curious to see how the Braves and other teams approach him during the off-season. Braves would clearly have to re-think how they construct the "early" bullpen if they bring Smyly back.

At this time I can see no reason to even consider bringing Smyly back. Morton would be my first choice as the vet to lead the charge. Would give strong consideration to Greinke if money is available and his ask is within reason for a 38 (?) year old.

The Smyly deal was especially odd because of when it happened. He was the first (?) significant SP signed, as if the Braves felt they needed to jump the market to get a guy everyone was going to be chasing.

It was nowhere near as bad as the Smith contract (which I blasted the moment it happened), but it was an odd signing. At the end of the day, Smyly has provided innings at the back of the rotation. Obviously not something you want to pay $11M to get, but he wasn't some complete void like Hamels...and the downside is only a single year.

O'Brien dumped all over Smyly in his game write-up at The Athletic.

Picking up on Enscheff's angle, the Braves supposedly bought in on Smyly's uptick in velocity during the 2020 season. He started out the season showing that uptick, but it has evaporated evidenced by the Gameday feed. I really can't believe that they were that reliant on analytics from an anomalous season. It was just such a knee jerk move.

I've read speculation that ownership surprised Anthopolous by cutting the budget after he signed Smyly, but that explanation only gets you so far -- paying Drew Smyly $11 million a year doesn't suddenly become a good idea with a larger budget.
