GDT 8/5/2021 Braves @ Cardinals - Leaving Mediocrity in the Rearview Mirror

Why would you use him in a big spot? We don't use Santana and Greene in big spots. It would give us the option too though vs a lhh portion of lineup. Minter's fWAR is 0.7 and FIP and xERA are good. His xFIP is high

Greene doesn't see the playoff roster either way.

I see it as a toss up between Santana/Minter/Muller.

With Rodriguez here I could see the need for a third lefty. If thats the case Muller is above Minter in my eyes in the pecking order. I've just seen Minter blow up all too often now.

DFA Greene (unless he has an option)
DFA Smith (unless he has an option)
Option Touki
Option Almonte

Personally, I'd keep Touki in the pen because I think he's going to be so good there. There's also a question of what to do with A.J. Minter, who has been pitching like hell in the minors.

Touki over Tomlin doesn't move the needle either way so I'd be fine with either. Slightly more confidence that Tomlin won't have a big blowup.

I just did a quick count (which might be inaccurate), but the 40-man looks to be at 38, which wouldn't require anyone to be DFA'd in order to active Ynoa and d'Arnaud fromt the 60-day DL. That said, it's not like there aren't several DFA candidates if room is needed.

If they don't have options they'll have to be DFA'd to be sent to Gwinnett.

I'm actually curious to see what the Braves will do when rosters expand for September. Unlike previous years, expanded rosters only go to 28. In the past it had been 40. So that's 2 additional spots.

Ideally it would be Contreras and Pache. Third catcher (who can actually hit a little) and defensive replacement/pinch runner.

More likely it will be Kevan Smith (assuming d'Arnaud is back by then) and a scrub pitcher.

Pache does seem like a perfect call up to fill out the bench, but I would hate to stop him from getting consistent at bats right now in case he is needed in a larger role at some point or even just for his development next year. Is Terrance Gore healthy? He feels like a guy who is destined to become the 28th man as a defensive replacement and/or pinch runner.

Contreras could make sense, though I'm hopeful Kevan Smith is long gone by then. d'Arnaud should be back next week and Smith should be gone immediately. I would expect that they'll elect to keep Contreras playing consistently as well and they'll go with Arcia or Camargo as another utility piece and switch-hitting pinch hit option down the stretch.

I doubt Pache joins the big club, but I could easily be wrong. My guess is Contreras and Minter for sure. Roark is on the 40-man, so he's a possibility although he just duplicates Tomlin to a great degree. Last spot would probably go to either Arcia (would be nice to have an extra IF) or Almonte (if he's optioned when Rosario is activated).

If Kevan Smith is anywhere near this team when TDA comes back, including September, you may as well pick up a homeless man or woman off the street and give them catchers gear. The guy brings nothing to the club. We should bring up Conteras. No brainer.

Certainly nothing offensively. According to this, he's pretty good framing....

Didn't the pitching sorta turn around around smith's arrival?

Idk how anyone can be upset with how Touki pitched
Solid games in 3 out of 4 starts.
Ya he still has control issues but you can see the progress mentally and worst case is you have a future 7th/8th inning guy.
I still believe he has a chance to be one of our backend starters next season.
I don’t see how anyone would take Tomlin over him lol
