GDT 8/8/21: Gnats @ Braves - Intresting Lineup

Which again is absolutely fine if there was some sort of method to the way he used Jackson and Martin. Two days ago Martin came in in the 6th and was followed by Jackson then Chavez. They're less-trustworthy - no doubt - but the way they're constantly used in different situations certainly can't make it any easier for them to be used late in games.

That's the difference between managing "by the numbers" vs. handling personalities and mindsets. We constantly hear how much harder the last 3 outs are to get and how much harder it is to pitch in the 8th inning than the 6th. The numbers tell you that shouldn't be an issue, yet we continue to see Minter, Matzek, Jackson, etc. struggle mightily in the later innings even when the matchups seem to favor them.

Is that between their ears? Sure. Unfortunately there's not much anyone can do about that. If you burn Rodriguez early, you're always going to be left with guys who have a track record of struggling later in games. If Minter/Matzek/Jackson/Martin are going to blow a lead, I'd just as soon they do it when the offense still has a chance to score again rather than be stuck with three outs left and all the air sucked out of the building.

The bullpen has been great lately, top of the league. Just because you don't see a method doesn't mean there isn't one. Whatever method or lack thereof is being used now, it's working.

With Rosario expected back soon, what’s the OF situation going to look like?

I mean it’s got to be

Pederson
Soler
Duvall
Rosario
Heredia
Adrianza

Right?

Heredia is the backup CF, Adrianza is the top PH and backup SS, and we traded to get everyone else on the roster.

Can Adrianza fill in at CF at all? I'd rather have Almontes bat off the bench come postseason time.

I don't see how Adrianza can be the primary PH seeing he is the sole back-up at three IF positions. It's why I think Arcia probably is a September call-up. There's not a whole lot of flexibility on the bench right now in terms of defense.

Don't see Adrianza as the primary PH down the stretch personally. I'd think we come closer to actually seeing fairly consistent platoons, maybe even with a little more of Heredia in CF. Two of Pederson/Soler/Rosario/Duvall would probably be the guys called on to pinch-hit (possibly even if it creates a same-handed matchup) before you'd burn Adrianza because he's so important defensively as you point out - you hold off on using him as long as you possibly can in case you have to get creative defensively.

I agree that Arcia's probably added while you have expanded rosters, but if they wind up making the postseason I'd assume they'll carry every big bat they possibly can.

Snit has shown the idea is a semi-platoon in CF with Joc/Heredia. I think Soler is going to be in there everyday as he's apparently the poor man's Acuna in Snit's eyes...and I can't really disagree. When Rosario is ready he almost certainly will be in at least a semi a platoon with Duvall.

Adrianza is on the roster for SS, and the backup OFers will be the primary bench bats.

When TDA comes back, he and Vogt will make a decent semi-platoon at C.

When the Braves go to an AL city, I suspect Soler will get most PAs at DH with the rest of the OF filled in based on platoon matchups and the "hot hand"....so whoever most recently got 2 hits in a game will start.

Since there should be several semi-platoons in place, the "bench" will be pretty fluid...as is the case with most competently deployed rosters. On the days there is a RHP I expect to see a bench of Adrianza, Duvall, Heredia, and TDA/Vogt (C won't a strict platoon), and vs LHP I expect to see a bench of Adrianza, Joc, Rosario, and Vogt (AKA the type of high quality bench that should have been in place opening day). I would like to see another bench bat in place of a BP arm Snit will never use correctly anyways (I hate the 14 man pitching staff), but that ship has probably sailed.

Watching reds game tonight - they in a bullpen game and getting smashed by Cleveland. I am hoping their pen gets badly abused !

I have a hard time seeing Snit platoon Duvall. He won't just because

The only expense to Rosario is the contract, so the acquisition cost was reasonable. That said, I'm surprised they picked him up because I agree that Snitker isn't going to platoon Duvall. He could conceivably platoon Soler with Rosario (or rest these three and Pederson on some kind of schedule), but it will be interesting to see.

Perhaps we are giving Rosario too much credit. Considering his superior defense, perhaps Duvall should be the everyday guy over Rosario. Soler definitely should play everyday, and Joc needs to be platooned.

Having watched him quite a bit up here in Minnesota, Rosario is a bit of an odd player. He's been productive and that shows up in his surface stats on offense. He's not a terrible defensive player, but he's nowhere as good as Duvall. Does have a good arm. He's one of those guys that the closer one looks, the less bright the sheen. He's not a bad player, but I see him as redundant with Pederson. Hopefully he can serve as a solid guy off the bench.

What positions can he actually play? IIRC, he can play LF, 1B, and 3B, or maybe I’m getting him confused with his former brethren Eduardo Escobar.
