GDT 9-17 NIGHT OF THE FOLTY RETURNS

Bowman and DOB are both masters of this curious way of using statistics...the non-analytic method...maybe i will think of a better name for it later

Comparing a team BB stat to the BB stat of the greatest control pitcher in the history of MLB is....pointless.

I think it goes beyond (ab)use of statistics to a critical thinking fallacy: that mere comparison adds relevant or meaningful perspective.

I still have one seat open in my introductory rhetoric and composition class, if either Bowman or O’Brien is interested in working to correct this issue.

My question is was the manager good in August or on the road trip, but not good the past two series. Same question with respect to pitching coach. Same with respect to the pitchers.

Collectively the pitching staff has been a positive. So I don't see it as a failure. The walks do suck but the team suddenly walking a ton in 5 games is not on the pitching coach. As you said these are major league pitchers and they should know how to throw strikes.

The Braves have 2 in the top 10 in all of baseball in walks this season, 3 in the top 20.......Teheran has given up 79, Newcomb has given up 76, and Folty has given up 65....

My point is, while the player should have the ability to throw strikes, it is the pitching coaches job to help him throw strikes when he cant....and when you have this may pitchers having the inability to throw strikes, that is not something you can just brush under the rug by saying they have their ups and downs....this year we have a chance to make a playoff run. expected or unexpected doesn't matter....we can't afford to have our pitchers not know where the ball is going.

And it seems like since Hernandez has come in, that has been the case.

As a starter, think of all those extra pitches they had to throw and how that took from them going deeper in games. As a reliever, think of the extra pitches that makes them not usable the next night, or the runs they give up late in the game....

Decreasing the number of walks changes the game, period....our starters go longer, and our pen isn't as taxed

I know Braves' pitcher have to adjust to the home plate umpire, but if I was as bad at my job as the home plate umpire was last night I'd be fired.

The Braves are the 2nd worst team in BB/9 in MLB...behind only the 59-90 White Sox.

Something is clearly wrong systemically.

Whether the issue is acquiring pitchers with poor control, failing to teach control properly at the MiLB level, or failing to coach control properly at the MLB level is certainly open for debate. It's probably a little of all three.

What isn't open for debate is that it is a significant problem and is holding the pitching staff back from being above average.

Hard to find a lot of cross over cases because of rebuild. But here are a few
JT. Had a B.B./9 of. 3.3, 2, 3.4, 4.4. From 15 to 18
Folty had a B.B./9 of. 3, 2.6, 3.4, 3.4. From 15 to 18
JJ had a B.B./9 of. 2.7, 2.8, 4, 3.3
Wisler had a B.B./9 of 3.3, 2.8, 3.9. From 15 to 17. 2018 only has like 40 innings

Seems the walks spiked

Team B.B./9. 3.47, 3.40, 3.65, 3.89. 2015 to 2018. To me getting rid of Roger was the bigger mistake.

Take this with a grain of salt since the data set is so small. But I have done this with chuckie before. He has always come in and the staff immediately throws more balls.

I am excited with the better pitching this year. We have seen some flashes from our guys. But I really don’t think we take that next step with the current relics we have coaching right now.

Colon is another interesting case...

He had a BB/9 at 1.50 or lower for 5 straight seasons, then spikes to 2.86 with the Braves.

He then goes to the Twins mid-season and it drops to 1.69.

This year with the Rangers it was back down to 1.56.

Colon is perhaps the greatest control pitcher of this era, and he saw his BB/9 jump by over 1 the moment he joined the Braves, and then immediately go back to his established level the moment he left.

how on earth would a pitching coach affect colon that way, tho? not saying it doesn't/can't/wouldn't happen, but that's wild to me. why wouldn't he just continue to pitch as he always did? who was changing what about him?

Didn’t think about colon. Wonder with him was a comfort level with catcher. Was it game calling. But he throws 90% fastballs. Wonder if there is just a throwing program chuckie has. I don’t know how a guy like colon could be affected by a pitching coach.

All I know on this is they need to get rid of him just to make me happy

I feel like if they walk less people....they “may” not give up as many runs. Ha!

I think it’s a combination of being a little tired, playing some hot teams and maybe just thinking about it too much.

I don't know about keeping Rog on board. At this point of the season, everyone would be on their 3rd TJ surgery.

Maybe Chuck preaches not giving in and the pitchers are buying into it. Or maybe it’s some weird fluky ****. Who knows at this point.
