While I agree with you and fairly or not, Smoltz gets criticized by fans of other teams (Yankees and gNats come immediately to mind) as being too much of a Braves homer. I'm sure that he's (at least subconsciously) trying to avoid that criticism.

Yeah, I think it's fair to say that Smoltz hasn't exactly embraced the contemporary metrics and trends within the game. In the bigger picture, that attitude may have a strongly detrimental effect on his employability as a color commentator
