GDT 9/20/13: Braves (Maholm) @ Cubs (Baker) 2:20 PM - HEYWARD BACK!!!

It'd be fitting if the Braves clinch with a Medlen win.

Medlen, whom was crucified early in the year for not pitching to his 2012 numbers, while still being a very reliable and consistent starter, was almost demoted to the bullpen to make room for another guy coming off TJ, and is now the guy in position to bring us back to the playoffs.

If he could pull off a complete game tomorrow that would be great. I'd love to see it for him, as you note he was almost demoted to the bullpen at one point. Now he has a shot to win the game to clinch the division title. I'm sure he'll be excited, hopefully he pitches a gem.

Which areas would that be? Their starters have a worse ERA and pitched fewer innings than ours have. Their bullpen is over 1 full run in ERA worse than ours. The difference is actually bigger in the second half than the first. They have scored about 60 less runs than us. We have hit 25 more homers and are better in batting average, on base percentage, and slugging %. In fact theres a .050 difference in OPS between the teams. I know fielding stats can be sketchy but by the ones we have its a landslide in the braves favor. So yeah, other than the things like runs scored, runs allowed, wins/losses, fielding, batting average, on base percentage, and slugging % I see how one could say they are better in certain areas overall.

Try visiting a Nats forum like http://www.wnff.net/index.php?board=3.0 You would probably be the most optimistic person there when it comes to the Nats.

Yes, on starters because Haren has an ERA over 4-5+

I would take Stras, Zimm, Gio over Meds, MM, Julio.

Certain areas on offense as well.

I didn't mean as a whole on offense but they have been hitting much better lately, especially Werth and Zimmerman, as well as Span. Their biggest problem has been RISP, oh and they are 6th in the NL in runs.

I just saw the replay of 9th inning in Pittsburgh. Mercer threw away an easy grounder that should've been out three. The Pirates gave that one away and boy that kid Hamilton can run. I'd love to have him on the Braves.

The Nats must've went nuts watching the Reds steal that game at the end.

I mixed up a few of my stats apparently. Only 21 runs better with 1 less game played. They do have a better batting average but we have a better OBP and better isolated slugging %. Their offense has been better than ours in the second half so far. They do have virtually the same OPS as the braves with RISP on the season.

Haren has a 4.88 ERA in 29 apperances 28 starts. Maholm/Loe/Beachy combined for 29 starts for 4.5+ ERA. I can understand preferring the Nats big 3 to ours but the gap is really small. Their big 3 has done better in September but if you go by post all star break our big 3 has been far better than theirs. Haren actually has a better ERA in the second half than Zimmerman and Gio. Really they only have our big 3 beat when it comes to having more hype attached to their names. Medlen/Minor were the #1 and #3 best starters in the second half last year with a guy named Kershaw between them and Teheran is having nothing short of a fantastic rookie season. I am not going to knock the Nats big 3 but ours has been every bit as good as theirs have.
