GDT: 9/20/15: PHI @ ATL - This one matters

Maybe it's just me, but I don't want him around. Good in the clubhouse and all that, but he'd just be taking a younger guy's developmental innings.

I disagree, if you keep Moylan you just sign one less righty veteran for the bullpen. Moylan is a good ROOGY and in his case and he's better for the clubhouse than some other so called veteran leaders on the team. I think most Braves fans want Peter Moylan back too as long as he stays effective. While a small sample, so far righties are hitting .212 against him, 0.00 ERA vs righties and no walks against them either.

He's basically the same guy as Winkler and Winkler has to be on the roster as a Rule 5 guy.

Given the rate of attrition through injury (and possibly ineffectiveness) that we're likely to see in the pen, I imagine there will be room for Moylan. If the club likes him enough to sign him as a coach, I'll bet they want to keep him around.

Agreed. Plus it remains to be seen how effective Winkler will be in MLB.

BTW, Swisher has thankfully shown some life with his bat with us. But boy he is terrible on defense, he already has a -8 DRS on defense with us (-6 in LF, -1 in RF and -1 at 1B). His -7 DRS in the OF with us is in only 169 innings, that is scary bad and proves he is clearly a DH at this point.

If a team uses swisher as a dh, that team is in sad, sad shape

Comparing Winkler with Moylan puzzles me. When he was hurt, Winkler was the top performing pitcher in all of Class AA baseball. Now, I grant you it was 2014, but these numbers continue to speak volumes:

12 starts, 5-2, 1.41, 70 IP, 33 hits allowed, 17 BB, 71 K. And he had a 2.98 ERA in 2.13.

I think the comparison comes from the Braves' stated intentions of moving Winkler to the bullpen. Not sure what you're driving at, but if Winkler performs well in the Arizona Fall League, he's probably a shoo-in for the 2016 bullpen. He's a Rule 5 guy, so he has to stick with the big club most of 2016 or be offered back.

Surgically-repaired arm? Check.

Funky sidearm delivery? Check.

Cool-ass accent? Hell no.

Definitely not the same guy.

Didn't think so.

Plus while they both have a funky side arm delivery, Winkler's is unique and not like Moylan's delivery. Further, a better comp for Moylan would be former Brave Cory Gearrin in that they're both side arm throwing ROOGY's.

I am guessing 50 was mainly comparing them as both bullpen bound and both being side arm throwers that he expects to do best vs righties. But I wouldn't even compare them so much as side arm throwers given Winkler's unique delivery. And it remains to be seen whether Winkler will end up a ROOGY type or much more. Further, I am guessing they didn't claim him in the Rule 5 draft with the hopes of finding another ROOGY like Peter Moylan, Cory Gearrin, etc.

It seems Rico was driving at Winkler's potential being much more than a ROOGY type, bullpen bound or not. Further, I think Winkler would only need to be on the MLB roster for like two months into next season.
