GDT 9/22/22: Braves @ Phillies - Olson Dropped

Olson at .775 ops. He's gonna have to have a really hot streak to top .800. The last time FF had an ops under .800 was 2012. After 2012, his lowest was .841 in 2015. FF gonna finish over .890 for the 5th straight season this year

there are no clouds. FF swing is designed to age well.. he takes the ball up the middle and the other way just as much as he pulls it... He can let pitches travel deeper before he swings. When the shift is banned, he is going to be even better (along with Olson). Olson on the other hand has hands out in front so he has to load them and then he has a long swing that won't age well.

Even if year six of FF contract is under water, years 1-5 made up for it by a huge margin. I was excited to have the stat Matt Olson... not so much seeing the actual player. The pitching in the NL East is eating his lunch and I am very concerned we got a very average player locked up for freaking 8 years instead of biting the bullet and locking up a potential HOF'r for 6.

That isn't even taking into consideration FF defense is better.

Riley hasn’t been much better than Olson over the last two months, but I don’t see you chicken little’n his career. Bet you if Olson came up with the Braves you’d have a little more patience.

Olson is unplayable right now, but you have to play him because you invested so much.. but you don't have to play him everyday and certainly not in the 4/5 hole. He is **** for 3 months now. When do you finally say it is time to change something.

I know fans are reactionary.. I am guilty (not nearly as much as you). But at some point you have to look and say hmm. I am too scared to look at his underlying numbers to see if he is just the unluckiest player ever or if something is truely off.

As a fan, I really, really hope this is just him in a funk/adjustment that is taking time, sore oblique, wife issues... whatever and he will be better... but I refuse to keep saying, 'he will be better' just because he had a monster year last year in a west division with horrible pitching.
 
I am just glad it didn't take a full year for it to be seen what the loss of Freeman really amounted to. Maybe the Dodgers will listen to trade offers before the six years are up and we can get him back somehow if he is just as heartbroken as he was in June.
 
Handing out long term deals to bat only players in their 30s is never a good idea, whether they are homegrown or acquired via trade. It seems AA forgot that fact about 8 seconds after not allowing himself to give the homegrown version a deal that was too long.

The correct course was probably to let Olson walk after his initial control, then use 1B for Riley or whatever Rizzo equivalent was available that off season. All we can do now is hope this is a down year for Olson and he recovers in 2023.

Signing a future first ballot HOF is always a good idea

If he doesn't rebound there is no moving him without eating a substantial portion of the contract.

Olson will most likely rebound to make him produce at slightly below his value.

I thought about west pitching, but cahna and Chapman have been fine. It's just Olson that's been a dud
 
I suggest you guys bookmark this thread for a future day when Olson goes on a streak as hot as the cold streak he is on now.

what about the bookmark for the game thread a month ago.. or 2 months ago. This isn't like he is having a bad week or two or even three.. this is MONTHS of really bad offense and defense. So when hs goes 3 months of well above average play, then we can revisit this thread and get a good laugh. Until then, I don't think it is unfair to be critical nor wonder why twit or AA hasn't stepped in and said we need to spot start someone at 1st every so often and move Olson to the bottom of the order until he has some sort of clue on what he is doing.

Hard to disagree with any of this. I still have goodwill toward Olson overall and hope he can straighten it out and get back closer to Oakland production next year and over the next few years.
