GDT 9/24/21: Braves @ Padres - The regularly scheduled game

He’s one of the rare guys with the stuff to survive late into games. He really is an ace. He’ll pitch on Wednesday against Philly and if necessary against the Rockies., Big starts for him.

It was a four run lead, dumbass. Literally anyone in our pen could cover that over one inning. Yes, even Will Smith.

It doesn’t make much of a difference either way since he was at so few pitches. No reason to get upset about it.

Eh more than a couple in this pen can give that up in a hurry. We’ve seen it in recent days. And yes that includes Smith.

Either way my post was more of a friendly ribbing at those who devoutly are against pitchers being allowed to go the distance even if they aren’t facing any trouble.

I’m actually struggling with this. There is nothing I love more than dominant pitchers going deep into games.

Yet I see the 3x thru the lineup thing. You guys have convinced me. It’s for real for most pitchers.

But how do you become a Scherzer/Verlander/Sale quality pitcher throwing 4 2/3 and 2x through the lineup?

No problem. Thought it was directed at me,

great game from Max

crazy he has that game and somehow we lose a .5 game in the standings today lol

We have to win the division. With the Cardinals winning 14 in a row, they have opened up a 5 game lead on the Phillies (3.5 over Braves). They may have a shot to beat the Dodgers.

Man that Philly series is gonna be like a playoff series. Also we need to move Soler down he’s been pretty bad lately. Maybe Rosario in the lead off spot?

I think this is right... they have to finish 1.5 ahead of us. They need a 3-game swing with 8 games to play. If they finish 0.5 ahead, we can play Rockies to force a play-in

Were there people actually hating on him?

I don't think there was any of that. I think there were skeptics when the trade was made seeing he was a guy who had arm surgery and folks were bemoaning Coppolella's tear-down. His minor league stats post-recovery didn't match the scouting reports as scouts throughout baseball were gushing over what they saw as top-drawer stuff that had yet to translate into results. Once he got it together, you can see the potential most scouts saw.

I think there are durability concerns (as there are with most pitchers these days), but Fried is a tremendous athlete in the vein of the triumerate of great athletes (Smoltz, Glavine, Maddux) we had on the mound during our run in the 1990s/2000s. Like those three, Fried also appears to have that same competitive edge to him as well.

Every pitcher is a ticking time bomb but that level of athleticism makes me think he will demonstrate better than expected durability.

Guy is a horse and is hasn’t seen a lick of regression in his velocity and none in overall quality of stuff. Everything might have actually gotten better but not sure if encheff has looked at the pitch cast data recently in fried and compared it to prior seasons.

Educated guess: He’s still the same number 3, borderline number 2 starter that everyone argues is an ace when he’s in the middle of a hot streak.

That doesn’t seem right to me. If Ynoa and Anderson are solid #3 type pitchers Fried is at least 2 levels above that. That would make him a strong # 2 type pitcher.

Ynoa isn’t a number 3, though he has the potential to be. Anderson has been more of a 4 this year.
