GDT 9/6/22: Braves @ A’s - Olson’s Return

Save a couple guys (Michael Harris, Ronald Acuna, Spencer Strider, Vaughn Grissom, and Rasiel Iglesias) this is the same team that won the World Series last year.

You forgot one. But it still doesn't mean they are going to put up another near-perfect postseason. I would argue that the 1996 and 1997 squads were better on paper and on the field than last year's squad. The difference is pure old-fashioned baseball luck. I would say something about the baseball gods giving us a break but as an atheist, I really don't believe in that sort of thing anymore.

The 1998 team was the best Braves team of my lifetime.

Y'all need to realize this team could be three and done real quick just as there is a chance they repeat. Save a couple of guys this is the same club that was milk toast meh in April and May. The arrogance of this board is astounding.

Baseball is extremely unpredictable so of course this is possible. Braves if healthy have a much better roster going into the postseason than last year. Lineup is better, rotation is deeper/better, bullpen is deep as hell. But anything can happen in a short series. Winning the division is imperative to avoid that best of 3 WC.

The Braves are probably the most well-balanced team in baseball right now. I have worried about the bottom of the line-up going into egg-laying mode, but Grissom and Harris II haven't hit a wall. Of course, the post-season has always been a crapshoot (I knew that before Billy Beane was even born), so there are no guarantees of anything.

Not quite. Soler, Pederson, and Freeman helped out tremendously. Not to mention that Anderson was dominant in the playoffs. Also, Matzek and Smith went big nuts on everyone.

We'd be needing for big time performances from Strider, Acuna, Harris, Grissom, Olson, Jansen, Iglesias, etc. That is a big ask

Don't forget Rosario having the series of his life versus the Dodgers. Freeman was absolutely golden during the 2021 playoffs, but a lot of guys stepped up in key situations and the bullpen was magnificent when it had to be.

Of course. Winning the World Series is hard. But this team is more talented and is performing better than last year’s team primarily due to the players I mentioned above.

But mostly I was just trying to be cheeky with Virginia who hates this Braves team because they were an average baseball team in April.

It takes a lot to go right to win the World Series. But this Braves team is on pace to win 100+ games with 25 games left. They also have played at something like a 120 game win pace since the start of June. This team is as talented as any in baseball imo.

No doubt this team is talented. My point was simply that a lot of our top performers in last years WS are gone and we'd need quite a few guys on this roster to step up big time to have a repeat performance. Not saying they aren't capable.

By the way, just goes to show you how truly special last years playoffs were for us.

Pederson HR vs Brewers
Freeman game winning HR off Hader
Pederson HR off Scherzer
Rosarios NLCS performance.
Matzek striking out the side.
Soler leadoff HR and massive HRs in the WS.

The list goes on and on. I firmly believe that Don, Hank, Niekro, etc. had something to do with that.

Everything went perfect for Matzek and Smith last year and that pretty much never happens with relievers. Jansen and Iglesias are better on paper than those 2 and in a 7 game series Strider no doubt will factor into a late inning game if he’s had a few days rest and we are in a game 7.

I agree with Iglesias v Matzek, but Jansen is just as volatile as Smith. In fact, Jansen scares me even more, if that’s even possible. Plus, it takes him 45 minutes to make 3 pitches

No way is Jansen scarier than Will. It was a roller coaster for 3 seasons with him. Jansens has had a bad 15-20 inning stretch.

Considering he’s pitched 51 innings….a bad 15-20 inning stretch IS scary. But if you don’t think Jansen is scary in the 9th with a one run lead, then good for you I guess. He terrifies me and so did Smith.

If anyone gets on with even moderate speed vs Jansen, it is pretty much a guaranteed steal.

Will was scary with a 3 run lead. He walked the house and he gave up home runs at an insane rate.

Jansen is scary though. I’ll give you that. But the first three months of the year, he didn’t give me a heart attack. I can’t say the same about William.

Will was always scary, he was insane in the playoffs. Granted i wouldnt be quite as confident with Jansen if someone gets on, but he scares me quite a bit less than Will did.
