GDT: BRAVES @ NITS 8/12/16

Ironically he used to be extremely consistent and the knock on him was that he didnt have 30 HR power and didnt put up a .900+ OPS. Now he is on pace for these things and the knock is that he is inconsistent. Looking at his splits he has the same OPS vs lefties and righties this year. He has the same OPS in the first half as the second half so far. He has hit a lot better on the road but still a .832 OPS at home. He hasnt performed that well with RISP but thats because he is being pitched around in those situations. As evident by his .400 OBP in almost all men on base splits. As streaky as you say his worst month isnt even all that bad. He had about a .750 OPS through the first 2 months and since then he has been crushing the ball. Heck, he is even on pace for 8 triples and has 4 stolen bases with 0 caught stealing.

This is why I argue that the pick up of Kemp has been big for us. And another pick up this offseason could be even bigger. I think Freeman has been pressing for most of the season and chasing pitches he normally wouldn't. Now he will start getting better pitches.

I have to say I was skeptical that Freddie would ever be a 30 HR guy. He certainly has the power, but his approach didn't really seem to predict that. It's cool to see him putting up the numbers this season.

Some may have forgotten, but JJ was damned near unhittable early last season. His sinker looked insane for a few weeks there-- I remember posting that I would be surprised if he weren't closing for somebody by August. Having seen how last year turned out for him, I am 1) not surprised to see him on a dominant run and 2) skeptical that he'll keep it up. Flip while you can, boys.

Freddie has most definitely sacrificed some of his contact for power. Not a lot of it, but he has. The hitter he has been this year, with his power numbers, is more than enough to make us competitive with a few extra additions this offseason. Getting a healthy Teheran back and hoping Folty and Wisler can make a step forward would do wonders.

He's already an elite hitter (currently tied for 20th in wRC+ among qualified major league hitter) and still improving.

I'm surprised some people are OK with Freeman since he's striking out 25% of the time now. I thought that was bad. Either intentionally or not his power has increased along with his strikeout rate. Something that can go hand in hand. Overall though his offensive ability has been the same. WRC+ 138 this year so far after posting years of 150, 141, and 133 the last 3 years seasons. Other then that the main things to note of difference this year is that his contact rate is down about 6% which explains the K% increase. And that he's hitting more flyballs and less groundballs. Getting more lift = more doubles and homers. So he's changed his approach a bit.
