GDT: Braves @ Phillies Game 3: No Mentum Like Momentum

Really feels like the writing was on the wall for this series once Morton went down with injury, and then Fried had to come back and pitch rusty after weeks of not starting. And of course the game 1 which was potentially a must win, our hitters had to show up after a 5 day break.

And unless I'm missing something, there was no requirement to put Morton on the IL with expanded rosters and everything pretty much locked up. If there was any potential he could be ready to go for the NLDS (which there obviously was since they took him off the IL on Sunday), he should not have been put on a list that would make him unavailable for a short series.

Hope the Braves wake up today with a fire in their ass....doubt it though

I mean the lesson we have to be learning is the importance of pitching.

I wouldn't mind a healthy investment in the bullpen. I think Strider, Fried, Soroka, and Elder isn't a bad start. Throw in 1 more reliable vet (assuming Morton retires)

Or we need a LF to have a true nearly top to bottom lineup.

Right now we have one of the best offensive RF in the game, one of the better offensive 2B, one of the best offensive C, one of the best 3B, one of the best 1B, we can live with meh at SS and CF if they have defense (which Arcia and Harris have) but I think the struggle bus in LF is a problem. IT's not the end of the world, but ti has been making a huge issue in the playoffs.

I don't know how to solve the issue, but I'm not a GM. I just can see some glaring holes and some of them are going to be blown wide open as we have a healthy chunk of Arb 4 guys next year (Soroka, Fried, and Minter) who will need to be replaced.

Looking at the farm, hopefully Smith-Shawver will be legit but I'm skeptical. His walk rate in the minors leaves something to be desired, but most of the rest of our prospects are middling to bottom. Hope someone starts stepping up next year.

The obvious weakness of this team this season was always pitching. Our offense was historic. Can't expect it to be the same next year, but it should be really good still...

AA really whiffed at the deadline IMO by not adding a starter. Yes most of the starters traded amounted to jack ****, but he still could have added.

Next season you have Fried going into his walk year, and he did have elbow issues this season. It's not certain that that doesn't come back next season. Soroka has not shown that he can be trusted with 20-30 starts. Elder had a great start, but really fell flat at the end of the season. AA really does need to step out and make a deal on at least 1 SP, if not 2. Doesn't have to be long term, the free agent class for SP is MUCH better in 2025

Scherzer, Cole, Sale, Wheeler, Ray, Lynn, Glasnow, Hendricks, Quintana, Stripling, Clevinger, Kluber, Cobb, Kelly, Gonzales, Wacha, Peralta, Fried, Buhler, Woodruff, Pivetta, Burnes, Bieber.

No one has more than 1-2 dominant starters which we have and a really good 3 in Morton.

Two of them crashed at the worst possible time.

I think I'm at the point where Harper should get the Bonds treatment if the game is competitive and there is a base to put him.

Besides the obvious difference in energy, one thing that stands out to me this series is the Phillies have a strategic approach about how to attack our hitters. They have flat out told us that we struggle with high velocity and can be over aggressive, and they are executing on exploiting those weaknesses.

It doesn't seem like the Braves have an approach specific to Philly hitters... Just our guys going out and doing what they do. But every Philly offensive inning takes 20 minutes and 30 pitches and at at best leaving a man or two on. Half our innings are 9 pitches, 3 up and 3 down.

The same thing happened last year. I remember just how uncompetitive the series was last year. And so far this year, it has been uncompetitive.

It aint pitching losing this series for us its the bats. We have 7 runs over 3 games. Thats going to lose a lot of series even with Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz pitching. Elder and AJSS got lit up in game 3 but they would have had to be near perfect for us to win that game scoring only 2 runs. In a 100 game series we beat Philly 60 times out of 100. In a 5 game sample size anything can happen. The lineup is just too good to stay this cold for long.

Our lineup is not good at adjusting to a pitching staff doing the same thing over and over to them. They just assume every game is going to be like Game 2 where a couple of homers bail them out.

We have the best hitter in the game leading off. Its unfathomable that his only bad split for the season could be the one and only playoff series.

Agreed. We have absolutely gone up there hacking. See Acuna, Ronald first pitch of the series.

Honestly I wish our players had more stones. After the second time staring down Arcia I'd have thrown him up and in. He's trying to intimidate people and it worked.

100%

He gets to dive out over the plate, and sit back on inside stuff because he isn't afraid. Buzz his ass on 4 straight, then the next AB.

Does anyone have a stat based on just overall batted profile on how our three games in this series rank amongst the season? Had seen this for Game one but not the others. It feels like we've had 3 bottom 10-15 games all year on basics like exit velocity and expected results, etc. Curious if stats back that up.

The odds of three [bottom 15] games in a row is like 0.1%...

I try not to hate anyone. But Bryce Harper makes that difficult. Honestly, if the Braves signed him I would put being a Braves fan on hold until he left. Dude is an absolute asshat.

Honestly I find it hard to hate on him that much. He's abrasive for sure but he's gone above and beyond for his team.
