GDT: Braves @ Phillies Game 4: Avoid the Death Blow

I dont even think the Braves losing would be a top 5 storyline. Dodgers won 111 and havent won a real WS in a longtime. Yankees havent won one since 09. Mets and their 300 million payroll went out in the WC round. Cards lost in WC.

Braves are setup as good as anyone going forward. We have a few needs this offseason but compared to some other clubs, nowhere near as drastic. A possible Phillies/Padres NLCS, the two teams who went all in on Machado/Harper that offseason, funny how baseball works sometimes.

I don't know if he can make it official until after the World Series, but up here in Minnesota, all indications are that Correa will opt out and is looking for a deal in the neighborhood of 7/210 MM. Twins are in a bit of a pickle here. I think it was their hope that Royce Lewis would get some ABs in the OF/DH this year and slide into the SS position next season. Unfortunately for them, Lewis keeps doing a Byron Buxton imitation.

Anthopoulos isn't averse to pulling off the surprise move and we'll likely see one again this off-season. Infield is set. Catching position is set. 2/3 of OF is set. Questions are in the rotation and bullpen (especially if Jansen moves on). One proposed move that had folks salivating last off-season was the prospect of picking up Reynolds from the Pirates. I poo-pooed that, largely because I thought the Pirates were going to be considerably better than they turned out to be. I still don't know if the Braves have the prospect capital to pull off a deal for Reynolds, but it will be interesting to see if there is interest in Grissom. I fully expect Anderson and/or Muller to be dealt.

Braves are not set in the infield. That SS position is going to be the primary target for AA this offseason.

I wouldnt say infield is set, count me in who isnt in love with Arcia or Grissom at SS unless AA adds DeGrom. Bullpen probably needs a couple arms for sure. I still think AA lands one of big 4 shortstops, even though the other 3 cost more than Swanson will.

Mets and Cardinals have a lot of question marks going into the offseason. They have 12 guys going to free agency if I remember correctly, and an extremely high payroll already. The Cardinals are losing Molina, Pujols, and possibly Wainwright this offseason. Not insurmountable, but it is an era ending there.

Mets questions is mostly pitching. They're pretty well set on offense, a good bit of their pen and most of their rotation is up for free agency. Cards dont have much money committed next year, so they should be ready to spend this winter. Braves have some holes but nowhere near what other teams face.

Thanks for the correction on that. With all the talk about Swanson's impending free agency, I had an inexcusable brainlock.

But do you go SS or LF? I don't think we have the money to cover both through free agency. I'm not that big on Swanson. I see him as the 4th or the 4 FAs at the position behind Correa, Turner, and Bogaerts and probably the cheapest (as if somewhere north of $20 MM AAV is cheap). I think either Correa or Turner would drain the entire off-season budget (I could be wrong). At age 30, Bogaerts may have to settle for a shorter-term deal with a higher AAV than a long-term deal worth more but having a lower AAV. That might be the aisle where Anthopoulos shops. Like last year with the Freeman deal surrounding first base movement, I think everything this off-season relating to the SS position depends on Correa.

deGrom
Carrasco
Diaz
Bassitt
May
Walker
Nimmo
Givens
Ottavino
Lugo

That's 4/5 of the rotation, and some of their top pen guys. Plus their starting CFer. That is not easy or cheap to fix

Wtih AA I wouldn't be surprised if he makes goes either way. He has consistently improved by getting the best available player. I doubt he has the prospects to go move for Reynolds like was mentioned earlier. So I do expect his moves to come from FA because all it costs us is cash, which the Braves have.

Also, I mentioned in another thread that he could explore going big in the rotation (deGrom, Rodon, etc. ) or maybe in the OF, and sign someone like Elvis Andrus for SS. Or stick with Arcia at the SS role next season to give Grissom more seasoning in Gwinnett

Mets have a ton of question marks. Cohen has deep pockets and I thought the moves they made last off-season (and at the deadline) were just too cute and really didn't move the needle for them outside of Scherzer and Marte. Canha's not that good and their deadline moves this year were odd. Escobar is really a utility guy who was expected to do too much. I've always liked Nimmo and wouldn't mind the Braves taking a look at that possibility. Stick him in LF and we probably have the best OF defense in the majors.

Grissom, Anderson, Muller, and filler for Reynolds?

I don't know if that gets it done, but it would be a start. Maybe Shuster instead of either Muller or Anderson. They may like Malloy or some of our guys in the lower minors. Pirates just look to be a lot further away than I thought they'd be. They had a AAAA line-up on the field most of the season.

Grissom, Shuster, Malloy I’d do for Reynolds.

1. No doubt the Braves will sign Turner or Bogarts or Correa. They will not go into '23 with Arcia as starter.

2. I don't think even with that signing DeGrom is off the table.

3. Ozuna and Rosario both need to go.

4. Arcia and Grossman need to be half the bench.

Turner has a lot of his value built into speed and that usually goes first so I wouldn’t spend as big on him as I would Correa. Correa has more power and better defense. If I spent on a big SS this offseason (we’ll have to) then Correa is it. Swanson has had several extension offers I’m sure and hasn’t signed so he wants to test the market. I don’t expect him to be back.

Agreed about Swanson having several offers and going elsewhere. Is what it is.

Correa did have his agent contact the Braves this offseason to offer a similar deal that he got from the Twins. However, AA does not grant no trade protection or opt outs (so far). So he may not be the best fit if that is what he is expecting. I'm thinking Turner is the primary target considering he may want to be back on the east coast (reportedly)

100% with you on that. I think Swanson joins Freeman in LA.

I said that earlier in the season. I think that’s where he wants to go too. Won’t surprise me at all. Cubs will be big bidders this offseason and reportedly want Turner. Turner will have to decide who gives him the best chance to win and money.
