GDT: Braves @ Rangers 5/17 Finding our Stride(r)

If it's any consolation, the Rangers' announcer did the same thing. (Based on what y'all are saying since I didn't get the Braves broadcast.)

Two days in a row … you woulda’ thought it was Soler hitting it out of the damn stadium…. even though neither one of them looked that way instantly off the bat - but they are inside the ballpark and should have a better idea of if it’s going into the upper deck. Such a first world problem to have :) I feel silly even complaining about this ….

Has there ever been a poster more wrong a player than Striker on Arcia?

We'll wait and see. When Arcia hits a 1 for 26 slump the board will turn on him.

One thing is absolutely certain, Arcia is playing way, way, way over his head.

I'll also say that back on the old Scout boards I was down on Johnny Estrada when everyone else thought he was Johnny Bench. This feels very similar.

We don’t know how far over, and retelling his career stats gets less and less useful as time goes on and he continues to hit the ball better than he ever has.

Dude has a .400 BABIP. His numbers will drop massively. The only question is how far they drop once he hits a slump.

.entering tonight...
342 avg, .308 xBA
.562 slugging, .527 xslugging
.414 wOBA, .389 xwoba

So sure, he's been a little lucky, but he's just been damn good

What's wild is that Acuna is walking as much as he strikes out. He has a 181 WRC+ and he's arguably been unlucky

Obviously he will come back to earth a bit... no one is trying to say he's going to sustain what he's doing... but his statcast data suggests he has been pretty good even without the luck

He absolutely has been blazing hot but unless he's on something, he's not suddenly a completely different hitter. The league will adjust, he'll cool off, and regression will happen.

I hope we got lucky and a certified miracle occurred but that's pretty unlikely. We'll see how it goes.

You seem to be arguing against an idea no one is putting forth.

Yup - the argument has always been it was a tremendous use of our limited remaining resources to lock up someone who will have substantial surplus value at a position of need.

Framing the argument any other way to dishonest at best.

playing up Grissom all year only to get Arcia to take that cheap contract is the best rope a dope ever in sports history

Imagine paying Turner 300 million to give you a 88 WRC+ and seeing Arcia being the best hitting SS in baseball for pennies
