GDT: Braves @ Rangers 5/17 Finding our Stride(r)

Unless they found some data supporting the move like spin rate etc I’d question it as well.

It likely means he won’t keep up that outrageous HR suppression rate. I think the sinker was a huge part of that?

Here are some stats from one of Soroka's past starts. The 4 seamer is showing better spin than the 2 seamer.

I don’t understand the Soroka thing.

From everything I've gathered, he's still going to feature his sinker but the four-seamer is now his go-to pitch. Apparently, this last start was the first one in which he not only went four-seam heavy but also threw it the way he wanted to, and the results spoke for themselves.

If this start is indicative of his average spin rates, it's pretty interesting. A slider with an average spin of 2,794 would rank 7th in baseball among pitchers with at least 250 pitches this year (top 3%).

A sinker of 2,200 would have him tied at 93rd (top 45% of the game), a 4 seamer at 2,394 would have him tied at 65 (one rpm below Strider and almost in the top 20% of the game), and a changeup at 2,211 would be 14th though spin rate doesn't tell us as much about a changeup from what I understand.

Of course spin rate isn't the end all of pitching but it's a good indicator. If what he threw in this start is where he'll be when he comes up, the slider could be elite. Even the year average would be top 35 in baseball. An elite slider, a 93 MPH fastball with good movement, and even an average sinker and change is a pretty decent arsenal.

I mean I get fans loving Culberson and all, but are we really that excited for a sub .500 OPS in AAA guy getting plate apperances over anyone else on the team..

Watch Snit get him in there late innings tonight and Charlie hit a dinger.
Somehow that would not surprise me in the least.

And in all seriousness, it is much better to have Shew down in AAA seeing daily action so that hopefully he can play and improve.

And the main thing is he, like Shew, fills the need for our SS to look like Dansby from a distance.

He'll be getting Adrianza's and Shewmake's plate appearances. 15 per quarter season. And they're 0 for 14. I'll bet Culberson can replicate that.

Charlie Culberson recalled from Gwinnett

Utter joke in my opinion, but I suppose there is the grit argument. Agree that Shewmake needs to play every day and that wasn't going to happen in the current big league situation. I see they signed Chad Pinder last week and I thought he, more than Culberson, would have been the likely addition.

Come on, it’s an “utter joke” to choose culberson over pinder?
