GDT: Braves @ Red Sox 9/1; #MyNewAce's follow up

I'm glad AA didn't give JD anything close to $92M, and I don't even know what JD is doing this year. Honestly couldn't care less.

What I do care about is his latest short term slugger is once again paying off handsomely.

I mean as much as I want this team to spend like the Dodger$. I am too glad he didn’t match that. But no one can realistically say he would also suck here.

AA said on the radio yesterday that Wright has looked really good his last 2 outings at the alternate site.... so i'm assuming that he'd be the one brought up

me too.

I heard AA say Wright was pitching again today in Gwinnett. So i'm not sure he can go on Friday.

They used Ynoa last night so I'm not sure what Friday's plan is. I hope it's Davidson or Weigel, but I've been wrong all year on that.

And people still bash his FA signings....

Any chance Wright starts one of the games Friday?

He was supposed to go today in Gwinnett - if he looked good again, that should line him up to replace Erlin next time through.

“So far he’s had two outings and really gotten himself straightened out,” Anthopoulos said. “We’re going to give him one more on Wednesday. But you like when you see it happen more than once — guys get into a groove and can you go do it two or three times, can repeat good outings in a row. His slider, he’s not getting on the side of it anymore, he’s getting a lot more depth.

Folty's further away - only up to three innings last time out - would guess that Hamels would be the choice to replace Tomlin quicker since they said they were thinking about letting him get stretched out while pitching for the big club.

“A lot of 94s (mph fastball), which was great to see,” Anthopoulos said. “That was definitely a step in the right direction, and we’ll see how he is the next time out. He went three innings, and as he continues to go (deeper), does he maintain that velocity? If you look at what he did last year for us, especially in the second half when he came back and did well, he averaged 95. So he’s not far off. But again, we’re going to continue to take time on that.”

I know what you mean. Claiming he would have been bad for the Braves in 2020 because he's been bad for the Twins does not make anyone "right".

AA was already "right" for not matching that deal (or even coming close), regardless of how JD performed in 2020...with the Braves or anywhere else.

So we are supposed to believe Wright has been horrible at executing pitches for 2 season, and now suddenly after 2 games at the alt site he's fixed?

Color me skeptical. Wright needs to figure things out at the MLB level, and it's hard to say if the Braves can let that happen with 1 month left in the season. But...he still may be the best option for a spot.

Making some long term assumptions, having 2 senior citizens in decline years pulling down $20M plus per and surrounded by young stars still looking for the big paydays is a dangerous maneuver at best

Assuming he is/was good today and is going back in the rotation he would have just 4 starts the rest of the season. And you could schedule it to where it would be the Marlins, O's, Marlins, and Red Sox. With a 3 game lead and 25 games to go I would be ok with that.

Yup.. but certainly don't make any plans for next year based off those results. The plan for next year should be the same as this year

Fried
1 Yr Veteran (Bauer?) to replace Soroka
Veteran (someone to fill the Hamels role)
Anderson
Wright/Folty/Touki/Davidson/Weigel

Hopefully by middle of the year you have Soroka back. But definitely looking at the roster, two veteran additions are needed.

They announced Milone and Tomlin as Friday’s starters.

That’s exciting right there....for the Nats.

To say something good about them, a 7 inning double header is where I'd put them. If they get you 2-3 innings you are only covering 4-5 innings. That is not horrible. If they get you 3 it's like 5 in a normal game. Tomlin might be worth a start if we play in a neutral to pitcher friendly park. We just cant have him in a park like Philly.

As far as let that happen....depends on approach.

It may be important for the Braves to win another division. I am someone who thinks those division flags matter.

But in this case, you have a very weird format. You are playing the first round as a best of 3 at the higher seed's park. Being at home does not get you home field advantage from crowds nor extra revenue. It does let you bat last and be more familiar with the surroundings.

The short season and clusters of teams around 500 make it very difficult to know your opponent.

If the braves win the division they are the two or the three seed. Does that matter? If they are top 4 they get home field.

So it will be interesting to see how much they prioritize winning. I'd prioritize having a game 3 and game 4 plan over winning.

I think the worst outcome for us right now would be to get in the 4-5 with the Padres. I am not nearly as high on the Padres as most are after the deadline, but I do think they are clearly better in a best of 3 than the other options (Dodgers and Cubs should be the 1-2 in this scenario).

Winning the division pretty much assures they will play a ~.500 team in the first round. I think that's important. Take that 2nd seed and you could be looking at someone like the Giants. lol

All the focus on Wright's slider and not his inability to throw strikes? The meltdowns he had were embarrassing where he just threw slider after slider as he walked people. Funny is AA says he needed to fix the slider.
