GDT: Cubs @ Braves 4/29

How are the Braves doing in the standings? Can we take some of you off suicide watch now? For at least a week? Maybe?

Riley currently has a career OPS of 752.

This year Riley is 24 yo and has a 400 OBP. That is only 85 plate appearances. I am still shocked I have ever seen a Riley OBP over 350 after more than a series. 4 HBP seems an unsustainable rate. Right now his walk to K ratio is 1:2. Slugging finally respectable.

Riley is so interesting to me. I swear I look at him and think this is a 220/300/400 type guy who should be on a bench until he gets expensive. But then he just reals me back in and I think maybe he's better on D than I think. Maybe he can get that OBP to 333 and slug 450+. I'm still thinking most of his outcomes have him as a 700 ops guy than a 750 or 800 ops. But I can't stop dreaming on him. I swear I watch all of his at bats more than any other player.

The appealing thing to me about Riley is he consistently improves the areas he needs to improve. First it was his physical makeup. Then it was his defense at 3B. Then his plate discipline. Then he needed to get the power stroke back.

He's done all of those things and continually improved, all the while never doing anything other than act like a kid that's easy to cheer for.

Riley has proved one thing definitively in his professional career.

He improves like clockwork when he has a chance to see the league.

This. In 2019 the league finally got the book on him. July 2020 looked like he was near hopeless. Then he got hot in August (.875 OPS) only to see the pressure of the postseason force him back into a near unplayable level. August 2020 looked more like 2019 than 2021. He struck out 24 times in 77 AB and only walked 5 times. The real difference I see is in 2021 he has had a combined 22 0-2 or 1-2 counts. In 2020 he had 48 of them. 0-1, 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 3-1 and 3-2 have been really good to him in 2021.

Acuna may be the king at jumping for balls 5’ in front of the wall that he could just catch standing on the ground.
