GDT: Giants @ Braves 5/4

“Awful” is a good stretch farther than I’d go; but I don’t think he’s done much to justify the overwhelming faith some have in him.

I agree. On the other hand, I don't think folty has done anything to suggest he is irreplaceable either though

There’s a big gulf between “irreplaceable” and “not justifiably replaceable at the moment”.

Like I said in the game-thread yesterday, while I’m something of a Foltynewicz defender, I also think it’d be smart to shop him this offseason, assuming he continues to have a pretty good year (last night’s clunker notwithstanding)—especially seeing that his salary very likely could double in arb. But I also don’t think there’s anyone forcing him out of the rotation this instant—certainly I don’t think we’re at the point, with either player, that Fried should be inserted and Folty demoted—nor do I think he should be jettisoned for the first flotsam that comes knocking.

yup.

You'd have to see Folty get absolutely creamed again 3 straight times, and even that would likely mean a trip to the DL and either Anibal Sanchez returns to starting (as long as my take is how the Braves see it on Soroka and he stays in the rotation past Sunday with a good performance there) or honestly...Kolby Allard comes up (if Gohara is still trying to get himself together from what he had to deal with in the offseason with his family). If the Braves were serious with Max Fried, he wouldn't have ever been on the shuffling bus between Gwinnett and Atlanta.

That doesn't mean "Max Fried will never be a starter in Atlanta", but it's going to take quite a bit for that to happen now, to be honest.

I think this is your rotation next year:

1. Mike Soroka
2. Sean Newcomb
3. Julio Teheran
4. Veteran starter (maybe Brandon McCarthy or someone acquired in a trade)
5. Luiz Gohara if he gets his life together. If not, then someone else. Maybe this is where Max Fried comes into play, but it's also where others come into play (including Kolby Allard and Kyle Wright if he can get it together, shoot maybe even Touki Toussaint if the actual results start living up to the peripherals).

Perhaps we see the Medlen story sequel in Max Fried in which he's not seriously looked at as a starting pitcher by the team but ends up there because of circumstances, then absolutely crushes it and we're all eating crow on him, but those stories don't happen often.

He did and he proved to the braves that the pen is not his ultimate destination.

I also wouldn’t say that either.

I think he still has starter upside, but we should expect him to be shuttled back and forth from Gwinnett. You need a fresh long man out of the pen.

I think we control innings of a guy like Allard late in the year when that number gets high. We may keep Sanchez and have biddle.

The message was clear and Snit said it today. They want Fried starting.

If we trade for any big bat later this year I hope the package is centered around Fried and Allard

I don’t think anyone is advocating abandoning Fried’s starting potential. Though you have to be a bit oblivious to not recognize the team’s clearly feeling out Fried’s bullpen ability by using him in consecutive days.

If you consider best case scenario’s long term, very few include Fried as a starting pitcher on the Braves.

I've never been the type to jump on the consensus opinion. I call it like I see it although I never claim to be an expert outside of my professional field of choice.

I think yesterday was about not using up our regular guys because they knew fried would be optioned. He will be on a starting schedule alongside with folty as insurance when th inevitable meltdown occurs. So if that is the case why not throw him yesterday when that will be his regular turn?
