I hope the team doesn't celebrate just clinching a playoff spot. It is fine to recognize it to the fans.. shake hands with each other and wave to the fans.. but this team has higher goals and jumping up and down for a wildcard birth is silly to me.
For a team that hasn't made the playoffs in awhile, I understand. I expect the Mariners to do the same once they clinch a spot. But the defending WS champs and 4X division champs? Nah. Celebrate the division if that happens but that's it.
Pretty sure that was more of a race to the bottom, kinda like your mom, but thanks.

A little tough to criticize either of them - especially when you can remember this like it was yesterday...

A division title vs a playoff berth?
There was no playoff berth without winning a division title in those days so the huge celebration was similar to just making the playoffs, yes.
Fewer teams involved in the postseason, sure, but getting in didn't guarantee you much more back then.
