GDT Mon, 7/1 vs Yanks

I was told that if a pitcher was doing well twice through the lineup that he could face it a 3rd time with no issue.

Was the person who told me that wrong? It would be odd because that person is never wrong,

He’s not even trying to throw strikes.

True. He is trying to throw pitches close enough to get a swing, but not good enough to get hit out of the ball park. He knows how doesn't have the stuff to challenge the big bats. Has to try to trick them.

A BP arm they got largely because they were one of the few teams that could put that much money into a guy who has just been under investigation.

Yeah let's not forget that little tidbit. Yankees were basically gifted Chapman after the domestic violence incident. I wouldn't call that forward thinking. It was pretty sleazy of them and they were called on it at the time.

$11M...many teams could afford that.

Do you want to go back and review recent contracts to elite BP arms and then revise that statement?

Now you’re switching arguments. The statement was that they used their huge money advantage, not that it was a ethically questionable move.

I suppose when someone is wrong all they can do is reframe the discussion until they feel like they are right.

The Yankees are carrying a 166 million dollar payroll and they have better funding at pretty much every level of the organization than most teams.

IF they make a horrendous mistake or two it doesn't much matter. They can afford it.

That said, they have done a good job assembling this team by all kinds of methods.

You are severely underestimating the affect of the domestic violence incident. 11 million for a BP arm takes many teams out of contention anyways. Add in the fact that a suspension was looming and he was likely going to miss an unknown portion of the season, so a team had to have the financial flexibility to have a contingency plan at closer in case Chapman would miss a significant part of the year. Also, something to consider is how the incident and subsequent media pressure would ultimately affect his psyche.

It was a big risk for anyone to take at the time even if he was making league minimum. The Skankees were sleazy enough and had deep enough pockets to take the risk and not be affected if it didn't pan out.
