Let’s not assume there is a critical shortage of starting pitchers who can go deep in games just because the flavor of the week in “analytics” is extending bullpens.

Some analysts think they see an inefficiency where they can use deep bullpens to counteract pitcher fatigue and hitters developing familiarity with the starter during games.

This may well be a great strategy for certain teams or in short time frames.

But the underlying ability of the starting pitchers probably hasn’t suddenly dipped greatly just because it’s a hot topic for people that read blogs.
