Global Events & Politics Überthread

The point of my post was to point out the government’s propensity to sell us on something that they end up getting horribly wrong. Two weeks turns into two years in a snap. I’m sure we’ll end up sending in ground troops, and the folks in charge, almost none of whom are actually fit for their jobs, will tell us how quick and easy it’ll be. I’ll bet the over.
And we will be told immediately that it was a success (whatever “it” becomes).

Midnight Hammer — That supposedly destroyed Iran’s nuclear capability by 2 years yet we were back 6 months later because they were “days away”.

These people lie as natural as you and I drink water.

I guess you believe the international intelligence game is black and white and never changing?

Like they only had uranium at that one facility? Or didn't store any somewhere else?

I'm having trouble thinking it doesn't constantly evolve by the hour or days.

If you truly think that, then it requires you to admit the first operation failed and that you were lied to.

Trump as recently as last month at the SOTU said that we “obliterated… wiped out” Iran’s nuclear capability.

I do not take Trump word for word. I don't take anyone word for word.

I think we blew up 3 nuclear facilities. Thats it. Their only facilities? No. Do you?

Yes. I think we knew exactly where all of their facilities were when we attacked in June because those facilities have been getting inspections from the IAEA for years. And you can measure the presence of enriched uranium from a distance.

I do not think Iran had only 3.
See my longer response I just edited

If you can’t take the administration at its word, that’s fine, but then why do they get the benefit of the doubt? All the reasons to go to war with Iran were there during the entire time Trump and most of his team were saying it wasn’t worth it (and told us a vote for the OTHER side was a vote that would send us into war). It’s still not obvious to me what changed. Or what the actual goals are.

it is true that dealing with any complex situation will involve things not turning out exactly as expected or promised

that was true of covid

it is true of the war in the Persian Gulf

I don't think i can be accused of ever giving Trump the benefit of the doubt...it is possible to try to assess the pros and cons of this situation without buying into the misleading comments coming out of the admininistration

As a guy in Georgia not privvy to internal intelligence documents that likley change by the hour, I am not sure. I am sure it likely is going to be a bit messy.

I have seen former CIA operatives that are active Democrats speak to the evil that Iran contributes to the world, so I'm sure its not just Trump on a power trip. See public hangings or Oct 7...

BUT its evolving constantly and things change with China and Russia in the background moving the pawns around. I don't need a stated goal or mission accomplished sign to believe we are warding off one of the worst evils in the world. I know people who treat women like they do, and still proceed with public hangings are evil and should be rooted out.

Could copy and paste this into a thread about Iraq and Afghanistan 25 years ago. Hopefully this one turns out better than those did. I think there’s enough history to be skeptical, and the current administration does not inspire any confidence.
