The U.S. Army is rushing to the Middle East counterdrone systems that have been battle-tested in Ukraine, in an effort to thwart Tehran’s destructive attacks across the region, U.S. officials said.

A small number of the defensive systems, dubbed Merops, are being sent from U.S. Army stocks in Europe, along with U.S. personnel to operate them and train other troops, U.S. officials said.

U.S. officials said that additional systems will be provided by the U.S. company that produces them, Perennial Autonomy, in which billionaire Eric Schmidt is an investor. Schmidt and representatives of his companies didn’t immediately reply to requests for comment.

A U.S. official said that Ukraine is likely to provide trainers. Ukraine didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said the U.S. and its regional allies have sought Kyiv’s help against Iranian strikes.

The U.S. isn’t the only country interested in Ukraine’s battlefield experience. Representatives of Qatar and other Gulf states targeted by Iranian drones and missiles have traveled to meet with Ukrainian arms manufacturers and learn from their experience in building supply chains.

U.S. use of Ukraine-tested innovations marks a turnabout. For several years, U.S. military officers have sent equipment to Ukraine and studied the war there to learn how to defend against Russia’s large fleet of one-way attack drones. Now, Ukraine has become a laboratory for defensive systems to be used in President Trump’s new war against Iran—specifically in fending off Iran’s Shahed drones.

Shaheds, which Russia uses extensively, are an Iranian-developed weapon, so the U.S. faces a threat that is familiar from Ukraine. Moscow manufactures its own Shaheds and has developed versions that are even more advanced than those Iran is now launching.

The U.S. and its allies deployed some Merops systems in Poland and Romania last year following incursions by Russian drones. It has proved to be a popular system with Ukraine forces.

The Merops is itself a drone, small enough to be launched from a pickup truck. It can autonomously seek an incoming drone using radio waves, radar or the target’s heat signature. When roughly a mile from its target, it uses artificial intelligence to lock onto the target and detonate nearby, according to its users. Merops can travel at speeds of more than 180 miles an hour and reach an altitude of up to around 16,000 feet, according to one user.

Each Merops counterdrone drone costs less than $10,000, said one U.S. military official. The cost per unit should drop to around $7,000 as production volume increases, the official said. At least some of the Merops are produced in Taiwan, the official said.

The unit price is far lower than the cost of systems the U.S. and allies are now firing at incoming Iranian missiles and drones. Interceptor missiles from U.S.-made Patriot air-defense systems can cost around $4 million and producing them is a slow process.

Yeah I don’t see steering their economy as part of the punitive raids that I’m a fan of. It hasn’t gotten a lot of play in the media, but the declared justification for this campaign, that Iran would soon have enough drones and missiles to deter anyone from interfering with their nuke program, is reasonable. We can see they already had enough that intercepting all of them was impossible. People arguing that it’s none of our business seem to overlook Khomeini stating nonstop that he wanted to wipe our ally off the map. No one has to love Israel but if people don’t understand the stabilizing effect they have on the Middle East then they should probably hold off on expressing public opinions on foreign affairs.
I think it’s at least fair to question how much that stabilizing effect is solely for the shared geopolitical goals of the politically conservative Israeli and US Administrations. You are of course welcome to find those goals valid and important, but it feels rather dismissive to claim anybody who objects is simply not versed enough on foreign affairs.

Know all about the Kashogi killing- commented a lot on it back in the day.

Like I said I’m all for it

Our politicians are accountable to us. You seem to be aware of this when it comes to pointing out the failures of democrat polices (which you are correct and justified). Why have such apathy to something of far greater consequence?
It’s not apathy ,
It’s being realistic.

Will we tell the American public every step of a war we are fighting that changes even day?

Absolutely not

Can you look at policies in retrospect or real time and change ? Yes for sure

I think this is the most interesting unexpected development of this war so far:

More than a dozen Qatari officials toured the production facilities of a major Ukrainian defense company on Wednesday, according to its management, and sat for meetings with its directors. That visit came the same day as Zelensky fielded calls with Gulf leaders.

Qatari officials also visited a secret training ground in Ukraine, where Merops is also used, to learn how the country brings down Russian drones with Ukrainian and other technology.

“Everyone’s phone is ringing constantly. Calls from Oman, Dubai, Qatar, U.A.E.,” said Yury Hudymenko, the head of an independent group that oversees defense procurement.

No serious person is questioning the battlefields tactics or the operational goals (the things that “change daily”). It’s fine if they don’t tell the public that.

But yes.. our government has an obligation to state the objectives of military action to us. We are risking a global energy crisis — a threat that increases each day of conflict. US Central Command said war (or whatever it’s being called lol) is likely to last until at least September. The price of a barrel of oil went from $55 to over $90 in a week. Where will it be in September?

Our government owes our service members a clearly defined mission, so that when they accomplish it they can come home. To expect less than that is apathy.

To give some credit to the admin on Venezuela. It was made very clear the purpose of that was to apprehend Maduro. They achieved that and began immediately working with his successor. I can quibble on legality, but at least they justified themselves and defined the scope of action. That was also true for the 12 day war last summer.

They are going to find out that public opinion and buy in matter. It will never be perfect but they should be making more of an effort.

This administration hasn't shown much appreciation of this. Including public opinion in allied countries. We might be getting more cooperation if not for the silliness about Greenland and making Canada a state.

Thethe has become very pro war. This was a massive shift from the campaign, where he called me a milatary industrial complex cuck bc i did not support Russias agression against Ukraine

Maga in general seems more split and i think hes losing support with the wars and the Epstein behaviors
What pro war stances am I holding?

We have been told trump has been losing support since Billy bush - not going to happen.

Iranian leadership will learn soon enough. Ideally hat happens is their is a civil war where sadly hundreds of thousands will die but the Iranian people expel the Muslim hordes from their lands.

This Latin American summit is historic. Fixing the mess south of us will go a long way at solving the immigration crisis in the decades that follow trump.

It’s truly a shame TDS has infected so much of the country and they can’t see the incredible things he is doing.

Incredible that Cuba is about the fall and we are weeks away from what I think will be a mass e offensive against rh cartels.

What a time to be alive.

I get being anti war

But if you can’t get behind freeing Iranian women from being reduced to property and genocide of your own people

Like what can you get behind ? I guess most don’t hold women as highly as others

You cant even get behind freedom here. How can you people see a country where religion is forced on people using laws and violent enforcement and see that as evil but dont see people trying to do it here as perfectly fine. No one believes MAGA cares about women. Christians and Islam arent all that different in their beliefs on women. Islam just goes a little further. And just as Christians look down on women who wear revealing clothing is the same way a woman in the burka looks at the Christian women.
