Global Events & Politics Überthread

You can, in many cases, draw a direct line between US involvement in Central and South America and the current upheaval and influx of unaccompanied minors and asylum seekers. Right now, everyone is paying the price for these places being used as geopolitical pawns instead of neighbors in need.

Shocked, SHOCKED!, I tell you, to find that DPRK is increasing nuclear fuel production and taking steps to hide both it and ballistic missile facilities. Who could have possibly foreseen such an event?

Trumps just going to deny it. I dont know to what end Kim is working towards. I guess he thinks if he can get a nuke he will have leverage? That is not going to work out well for anyone.

Canadian Federal government rejects calls for decriminilizing all drugs by its major cities. I know yall think this idea is crazy but criminilizing drug use is often what drives that person into doing real crime. If you understood how many people do an illegal drug and still live a functioning life it would blow your mind. It makes the war on drugs like shooting fish in a barrell for cops. Thats the whole scheme when it comes to these towns setting speed traps to forfeiture cars to fund their town. They know if they search 10 cars a day they will find some reason to steal it. Hope your wife didnt leave her pills in the car, that prescriptons not for you. But its your wife, surely no jury would convict you. And you would be right. Only, theu arent arresting you. They forfeiture your car. You try and file a complaint. They offer to sell your car back to you for 5k. You balk at that idea and go see a lawyer. Lawyer tells you he charges 5k and cant guarantee anything regarding verdict. You get the hearing and you have to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt you werent trafficking yoir wifes pills. The officer that took your car testifies that he is an expert and deals with traffickers all the time. He says he knew you were hiding something because you were overly nervous. Or maybe he says you were too calm. Guesd what, both nervous and calm are things they are "trained" to look for when determining if someone is being deceptive. The judge rules against you. Now your out a car and 5k. Whoops.

Attempted assasination of Maduro during a public speech using drones with explosives fails. atleast 1 explosion but didnt get that close to him.

Great insight into the incompetency of rebuilding Iraq. Dont miss the part where he gets retaliated against for critisizing Hillary for making a joke about Gahdaffi after learning he was sodomized with a knife.

South Africa begins seizing white-owned farms

THE South African government has begun the process of seizing land from white farmers.

Local newspaper City Press reports two game farms in the northern province of Limpopo are the first to be targeted for unilateral seizure after negotiations with the owners to purchase the properties stalled.

While the government says it intends to pay, owners Akkerland Boerdery wanted 200 million rand ($18.7 million) for the land — they’re being offered just 20 million rand ($1.87 million).

“Notice is hereby given that a terrain inspection will be held on the farms on April 5, 2018 at 10am in order to conduct an audit of the assets and a handover of the farm’s keys to the state,” a letter sent to the owners earlier this year said.

Akkerland Boerdery obtained an urgent injunction to prevent eviction until a court had ruled on the issue, but the Department of Rural Development and Land Affairs is opposing the application.

“What makes the Akkerland case unique is that they apparently were not given the opportunity to first dispute the claim in court, as the law requires,” AgriSA union spokeswoman Annelize Crosby told the paper.

It comes as the South African government pushes ahead with plans to amend the country’s constitution to allow for the expropriation of land without compensation.

The seizures are intended to test the ability of the government to take land under existing laws, which the ruling African National Congress has previously stated is allowable if “in the public interest”.
