Global Events & Politics Überthread

WWII and the Cold War taught us how bad ultra-nationalism is, but here come the Trumpers talking about Hong Kong, something they know so little about.

Do you know why they're protesting? It's because of an extradition bill. People in Hong Kong fear that the bill will lead to more involvement with Chinese extradition.

Extradition? More like losing all their rights to free speech, open internet, travel etc. but keep thinking this is about extradition

The economic status of Russia, China and Iran have all decreased drastically since Trump took office.

More of the same delusions coming from the left.

China is about to collapse. Another 2 years of this pressure and they will bend the knee yet again to the rest of civilized society.

If we're going to play this game, China's economy was already declining during the Obama years before the Trump tariffs ever came. Those figures don't lie.

The sanctions Obama enacted during the Kiev crisis started the spiral of the ruble.

Iran politically has gotten stronger, as they've become the #1 target for Trump to attack. That gives them way more credibility as a threat than they had before he decertified the deal.

China has expanded their territory on the unclaimed islands, and now Duterte of the Philippines is their best friend. We see how much they're trying to suppress the Hong Kong protests indirectly.

North Korea has been given actual photo ops and credibility on the world stage despite all of Trump's play nice and "tough talk".

Saudi Arabia basically does whatever they want because as long as they buy rooms at Trump hotel, he's going to do things like declare a national emergency to bypass Congress to sell them arms. Also they murdered a US journalist and our Tough Talk POTUS didn't do a damn thing about it.

As for Russia, I don't have to explain why their position has improved. They basically are being given free reign by Trump to laugh at us and Trump will defend anything they do.

I highly recommend reading this book
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundations_of_Geopolitics

Everything Trump is doing right now, is pretty much textbook out of that playbook.

LMAO China is about to collapse. LMAO.

You do realize that China's second in the world in Nominal GDP, More than the next 3 nations in the world combined. And their GDP has consistently grown at a rate of around 7%. They'll slow down, because they'll have to. Nature of the beast. US hasn't seen 7% since the 80s but still are the economic driving force of the game.

China's nominal GDP growth has been hovering between 6.5% and 7% under Trump. Russia's economy has never been stronger. Russian Unemployment has been dropping and looking

“American households will pay about $770 more each year under 25% tariffs the U.S. has imposed on $250B in Chinese goods.

Consumer costs are likely to rise more if Trump goes thru with 10% tariffs on the roughly $300B in imports not yet taxed.” #TradeWar

More than ¾ of farmers think they will bear the brunt of #TradeWar tariffs.

So far, U.S. farm bankruptcies are up 13% over last year.

and wondering who picks up the pieces of those banlruptcies?
Wouldn't by chance be Big Ag that profited from the tax cuts/?

You criticizing the tariffs undermines 95% of your other economic "arguments"

does anyone think we have a right to protect and defend Hong Kong if China moves their army into Hong Kong for a hostile takeover?

I didnt criticize the tariffs. I dont know **** and never claimed to , about international finance.
Nor do I think anyone here does. Or, they wouldn't be here discussing international finance
I can however read and do understand $770 increase in household expenses a year would be/will be to some families crippling

While we bring China to it's knees

How is that old saying about "an eye for an eye makes everyone blind"

For the record, Frank Luntz is a (R) pollster/political consultant

Depending on whatever point you're trying to make, $770 can be crippling or it can be crumbs.

Funny how that works

yeah, #$3900
.............

$770 will pay for maybe 2 weeks of daycare for those having to work two jobs.
I read yesterday youth sport in US are in decline. Not because of video games or laziness but cost.
$770 will send 2 maybe 3 10 year olds to baseball

May seem hard to believe but to many Americans $770 is an awful lot of money.
Certain here if every American household was making $770 from your boy Paul Ryan's tax cuts you'd have graphs and charts in 3 and 4D

Lol your knowledge of the tax cuts is astounding.

they subsidize some the things they sell us, which makes trade an even greater benefit to the American consumer...we should be sending flowers to the Chinese

They don't let our products sell in their jurisdiction without extreme government intervention.

To argue otherwise is nonsense.
