Global Events & Politics Überthread

You have a lot of faith in China's ability to operate without western money flowing in. You also way overrate how committed to Russia China really is. China is an ally of Russia and will do business with them when others wont but they're not going to stick their neck out for Russia.

Just because certain technological parts or devices are manufactured in China doesn't mean that China will just turn around and sell them to Russia. These factories are in bed with western companies. They're not going to kick out the company that buys 99% of what they produce just so they can sell some to Russia. And if the company that buys all of the production from these factories doesn't sell to Russia, China doesn't care.

So much of what Russia needs to operate flows through the west. Could Russia change that? Sure, but it would take decades to get to that point.

Whoops

Yeah, I don't know why people think we should placate Vlad. He's shown nothing but total disregard for anyone. He didn't even regard many of his closest allies. Most believe that Erdogan and Xi 2 of his most powerful allies are pissed right now.

Imagine actually thinking this was true as both are closer to RUssia than ever.

And the lecturer leaves again unable to comment on the fact that his judgement proved to be laughably wrong again.

Poor man - All that 'knowledge' and still can't understand the world.

luckily we don't have a financial and inflation crisis happening over here... or this might come off as reckless

How was I off base? China has publicly affirmed ties with Russia but isnt doing a whole lot to bail them out. In fact, the impression is that Xi is pissed at Putin as the war has spiked cost of living and caused economic problems in China. That's a massive headache for Xi.

China has done exactly what I expected, they've ridden the fence. They publicly affirm ties and keep doing business with Russia, but they're not sticking their necks out for them.

What do you mean they haven't bailed them out.

They've increased economic ties and are now going to be even more dependent.

Just take the L man.

It was reported in March that the US shared intel with the CCP who in turn gave that information to Putin....But we are led to believe that the CCP isn't helping Russia?

I swear

Y’all act shocked at geopolitics all the time

It’s weird for such “free thinking geniuses that are always the smartest on everything”

Just saying

Every article I've read has China working with Russia but in a very measured way. The consensus is that China has done nothing to help Russia evade sanctions as China doesn't want to disrupt its own economic ties with the west.

Bailing Russia out would be China helping them circumvent sanctions. China is refusing to do that. Instead they're acting in their own best interest, taking advantage of cheaper Russian oil, but are also keeping their economic ties with the west.

China is playing this exactly as expected and it's exactly what I would do in their position.

The propaganda on this war was the highest we have ever seen. Outright falsehoods printed to protect the rules based post war liberal international order.

I'm sorry you believe that nonsense still.

He has fallen for the COVID panic and the Russia panic.

Disappointing for a bright guy

Notice how the Bruca devastation disappeared?

Ghost of Kiev. Claiming women are being raped.

It has been endless. All because we gave a tyrant no choice but to invade.

It makes perfect sense. It should fit right in with your take on China. The CCP is going to do whatever is in its own best interest. So ask yourself what's in their best interest? Well, a weaker Russia that's more dependent on China would be in their best interest. But Russia isn't even a top 10 trading partner of China's so the cost can't be too high.

So how do you achieve this? Helping Russia circumvent sanctions would bring Russia closer but it would help Russia resist being weakened while at the same time alienating China's biggest trade partners. So that's no good.

Cutting Russia off also doesn't make sense. Russia has valuable resources and this is an opportunity for China to exploit that. It would also move Russia out of China's sphere of influence.

The best result would be achieved through measured help for Russia. First, you keep doing business with them and look for ways to increase that business that doesn't circumvent sanctions. Circumventing sanctions is too much of an economic risk for China. This will also get Russia more dependent on you while still letting sanctions weaken them and drive them farther from the west and more into China's sphere. It also gives China the chance to take advantage of discounted Russian oil.

It's just not in the CCP's best interest to bail out Russia. It's in the CCP's interest to keep Russia weakened and alienated from the west.

We are in the first inning of this new world order and it was just announced that ties between the countries are getting stronger.

I'm just not even sure what argument you are making. Russia has been able to continue to survive because of the stronger ties to the CCP/India.
