Gomes traded to Royals for Class A utility guy

Shelby on Gomes: "He’s one of the best leaders I’ve been around and one of the best teammates I’ve ever been around."

Nothing to dislike about this trade. The aging Gomes gets a shot at another ring. Braves get a lottery ticket. This is what these trades are supposed to be. Actually a better return than I would have expected. The guy is old for the low minors but he apparently has a hit tool.

Depth is great, but having a handful of guys who top out as utility players is like having a lot of nice curtains in a house with no roof.

I don't think the plan is to build a house without a roof. I think the plan is that it's better to have curtains than bolts of fabric sitting in a closet. Gomes was a bolt of fabric in the closet. We had no use for him so we turned him into curtains (a utility prospect). No one was going to trade us a roof for a bolt of fabric.

I think I've stretched this metaphor to its breaking point.

The key is having Fredi as the foundation.

MP was considered a utility player at one time, no one really knows what a player will become..

Oh, jeez, I'm not arguing about the trade. Getting anything for Gomes is a net positive. It was in response to the exchange between Gov and Yeezus about having half a dozen utility guys.

A good utility player, maybe?

Again, I am not arguing against depth or versatility. Both are great and necessary. Those kinds of guys are valuable as depth to contending teams. Many of us have this irrational crush on Prado and Omar Infante—both guys were awesome to have as versatile depth players. Both guys seem to have grown in our estimation since their departure. Martin in particular went from underrated to overrated in a hot hurry. If we can spot in some versatile guys and leverage them in based on matchups and splits, awesome. We can't build a roster with those guys and expect to win.
