Gomes traded to Royals for Class A utility guy

i can't think of a more overhyped crappy player in a long time

i'm sure he is a nice guy and it's obvious he is scary ultranationalistic but none of that makes up that he just isn't that good

Depth is great, but having a handful of guys who top out as utility players is like having a lot of nice curtains in a house with no roof.

i think a lot of teams have a lot of guys who top out as utility players. like, most players in the minors.

Good luck to Gomes. Can always be a useful part on a team provided he isn't relied upon too heavily. I didn't like the signing last off-season because he's a limited guy who wasn't going to be around for the long-term (unlike a guy like Kelly Johnson who could play multiple positions), but he's a pro. His role will likely be very well-defined in KC and Yost likely won't ask him to do things he obviously has trouble doing (like playing the OF regularly).

I mean, I'm not saying he's a great player. But there's a reason he keeps sticking around and teams keep wanting him.

To get any return whatsoever, I'm sure the team paid the rest of his salary for this year and probably a portion of the three million owed in 2016. That said, it's still a perfectly fine deal. Much better than keeping him.

I thought he had a one year deal with a three million club option that vests with way, way more plate appearances than he’s gonna get. Am I misremembering?

Also, Gomes is now officially on my short list for next Braves manager.

Any players in the minors can hack the bigs and play more than one position, sure. But do you need me to specifically state that I'm talking about guys that we are putting on our 25?

I thought I heard earlier this year that it vested. I'm probably wrong.

It isn't even close to vesting, surprised you missed that since MLBTR noted it in their trade details. Further, the Braves apparently only payed a portion of what's left on his contract this year (according to Bowman).

I thought maybe you were confusing his deal with Grilli's at first. KC will have a team option on Gomes regardless.

are we putting the guy we acquired for gomes on our 25-man roster?

He's one of the several that have been referred to. See: Jace, Castro, Garcia, Ciriaco. Are those useful depth pieces or foundational guys for a winning team?

I don't think any of those guys are being looked as foundation players.
currently starting =/= foundation player for the future.

We lead the majors in losses and utility guys. Also swing men and spot starters. Oh, and some really good pinch hitters. And bench pieces.
