Grading Schwellenbach's Stuff

Let’s just hope Strider is the same after 2 major elbow surgeries. Kinda hard to count on him at this point.

I was in the same boat, but since it was a brace and less intrusive I sort of feel more confident. I also like that the timeline sets up for him to have a full offseason of ramping up his arm. I wouldn't call him the team ace at this point.. not with Sale, SS redux, or even Lopez... but I think he will be effective enough to be better than any other pitcher not named those three..

I know he went with the brace procedure but it’s still 2 major elbow surgeries. I’m hopeful but nervous about it. The world needs a full peak Strider career

I’m assuming Murphy will be brought back along slowly coming back from TJS

yeah, I would see Richie or Lara being ahead of Murphy at this point and I don't see either of them being ready in 25. I think Anderson, Hankenberg, AJSS, Waldrep, and Holmes will all battle for the 5th spot/ depth order next spring.. I think Ynoa won't be retained...And Elder/Dodds/Winans of the worlds will be traded this offseason.

The brace has a higher success rate and less recovery time. Who knows how long that lasts but he really should be good for a few years.

I’m aware. Granted it only has a higher success rate by a few percentage points. We don’t have much data on what a brace procedure after a TJS looks like… so I’m just a bit guarded

it is definitely fair to be guarded. I am more worried about it failing versus him not being effective.

If Strider continues to throw 100 mph he will break down again. It is inevitable. We have seen how mediocre Strider is when he isn't throwing 100. So a healthy Strider throwing 95 isn't really very useful, and it doesn't matter if an ineffective pitcher is healthy.

So the only logical choice is to have him throw 100 until he breaks down, then see if he can bounce back from a 3rd surgery.

This is another case in point showing the risk of guaranteeing money to pitchers.

I am not totally against it, but he'd have to come back for pretty cheap just to be a 5th starter. There is simply no way to justify spending 15-20 million on pitcher who pitches more like a 4/5 at this stage of his career. His stuff has clearly declined this year. Would he come back for around 5-10 million to chase another ring as a No. 5 starter?

I don't think he comes back. 20 million is a lot to turn down for a guy who never got that mega contract. I don't think he would even be guaranteed a rotation spot. I think best bet is ask him to stay in shape and if we need it we sign him in June and he can join the team after the all star break.
