Grissom and Yates Up

Why would odorizzi opt in? It’s 6 million plus his new deal or 13 million. Is he in any danger of not getting a one year deal north of 7 million?

Why would we trade pina at this time? We’ve had catcher injury every year. Most want Contreras to play more at dh. We have a dh. Carrying 3 catchers, as we are right now makes sense.

Soroka is the guy that might not be kept. But I think they will for one more year for sp depth.

Morton isn’t taking a discount, he’ll retire if that happens. I think he gets his money if he wants it. Rotation is too young and thin. Only changes if aa wants syndergaard.

We need to spend some money. We need to convince someone like the orioles or brewers that ozuna is worth a flier. Maybe pay 10 million next year. 2/24 is a reasonable gamble given his hart hit numbers. Plus orioles payroll is like 30 million so they can afford it.

They're not actually "carrying" three Catchers - d'Arnaud hasn't been available, even to pinch-hit. Tromp is only up in case something happens to Contreras before Travis is ready to play. d'Arnaud's an empty roster spot right now because they didn't think he'd miss the full 10 days if they put him on the IL. Not putting him on the IL is actually relatively dangerous - they had to send Heredia down to make room for Tromp, which means Acuna's the backup CF. That's far from an ideal situation since they've been quoted as saying they plan to do everything they can to keep Ronald from playing CF (at least for this year). Tromp will still have one option left for next season, so it would make a lot more sense to carry him as the third guy because Pina can't be sent to Gwinnett for anything other than injury rehab.

The third Catcher on your 40-Man Roster needs to be someone with at least one option available so you can send him down without losing him. That guy was going to be Contreras in 2022 before Pina got hurt and William proved he'd taken the step he has and exploded. Pina doesn't have any options left - they got a little "lucky" with the surgery shutting him down for the season. If he would have been able to come back after the break (as was initially thought), they would have been in the position where they would have had to DFA him and possibly gotten NOTHING for him - as soon as his 30 day rehab window closed (which would have been the last week in July) they would have to put him back on the roster, and they definitely weren't going to go the last 2 full months with Acuna as the only other CF on the roster.

As for Odorizzi, it's not out of the realm of possibility that he chooses to return if they promise him he's going to be part of the rotation. He'll be 33 before Opening Day, has a lengthy injury history (has only given his teams more than 170 IP ONCE in his career), and while his numbers have been pretty good on the surface this season he's still carrying an xFIP of almost 5 for three years running. Smyly had better recent numbers even with his struggles last season and he only got $5.3 million from the Cubs. With 50 games left on the schedule as of today, Odorizzi probably has 9 starts left IF he stays healthy and they don't go to a 6-man rotation if Anderson gets his release point figured out. How many teams are going to spend $8-$10 million on someone with his injury history that's in obvious decline coming off a 110 IP season (at most)? Wacha, Lorenzen, Pineda, Smyly, Hill, Martin Perez, and Quintana all got $7 million or less last winter, and Kluber got $8 million.
