Gun Violence

Violent video games are such a problem. I know that every time I play Skyrim, it's all I can do to not go out and hit people with swords while eating a whole wheel of cheese.

My word this is such a stupid point.

Did you think this was smart?

How many people do you encounter who load up on guns to prepare for a foreign invasion from our enemies?

I meet people like this in the South quite a bit when debating guns with them.

So tell me, when Russia, North Korea, and China all send vessels and ships full of soldiers to invade our country, that would mean they also have somehow wiped out our entire air force and naval power. Remember we have more aircraft carriers than the rest of the world combined.

So when our 3 biggest adversaries have somehow.managed to destroy the most powerful miltary's naval and air fleets, and somehow make it to California, Oregon, Washington... and they've also managed to somehow defeat all of our army, marine, national guard, army reserves, etc...

If they have the power and capabilities to do that, do you think Jim and Bob's gun collection in their doomsday closet is going to turn the tide?

Is this Red Dawn?

What happened in Vietnam?

One thing I think this actually leads to, and it would take someone more knowledgeable than I of the ins and outs of these laws and institutions to make a good policy, is that we really do need increased detection and treatment of mental illness in children. There have been quite a few of these guys who were clearly really, really, really screwed up in school, never got help, then grew up and killed a bunch of people, with Dayton being the most recent example and Sandy Hook being the most horrific.

Agreed. I do some work with the school social workers in Minnesota and there are so many problems in schools these days where better access to mental health (and better preparation for teachers to recognize the symptoms of kids in trouble) could help.

I live in the deep south. I have never met anyone with this justification in my life.

This feels like really exaggerated fiction.

Same here. The biggest reasons I hear are home defense (from criminals) and recreation (either shooting at the range or hunting). I think a lot of people also just find guns cool and enjoy owning them like someone else enjoys owning a nice painting.

I've never heard someone say they want to own a gun to defend against a foreign invasion. Defend against our government? Sure. Another government? Not really.

They probably overexaggerate because they know I'm a liberal.

But they've used the quote about Japan not wanting to invade mainland USA in WW2 because almost every citizen was armed.

Some even share memes online about Hitler not picking a fight with America because our citizens had guns.

They do genuinely believe it's to prevent a foreign invasion.

Here is the quote from Japanese general that gets brought up

You indicate multiple people have used the same quotes in conversations with you?

Sorry dude, I can't even get to half way believing this.

I have friends that share variations of this and one of Hitler supposedly not wanting to invade us for the same reason on Facebook.
