Gwinnett SS Elmer Reyes charged with rape\kidnapping in Ohio

Braves infield prospect Elmer Reyes has been charged with kidnapping and rape following an incident that allegedly occurred over the weekend in Ohio.

Reyes, who plays with Triple-A Gwinnett, allegedly forced himself upon a woman in a hotel room after Friday’s game against Triple-A Columbus. The 24-year-old is free on bond and is scheduled for a June 2 court appearance.

I would give the legal system a chance to sort this out before cutting ties to Reyes. There is one detail that I find a bit odd--there was a second woman asleep in the room while the rape supposedly occurred.

I volunteer a lot of time at our regional SANE Center. For those that don't know, a SANE center is a place where victims of sexual and physical abuse are taken by law enforcement that allows the victim to be examined and interviewed by nurses trained for such trauma. It is also a private setting that most of the time allows the victim to avoid going to a public emergency room.

I say all this to point out that in a lot of cases, rape is not always the violent/beat someone senseless crime. In fact, there are many instances in which someone is raped and left with no signs of physical trauma. She could have simply said "no" and he forced himself on her.
