Harvey Weinstein

The sad part that is getting lost in all of the denouncement hoopla is that his behavior seems to have been an open secret for a long time. Take this Seth McFarlane joke from the 2013 Oscars:

Touch a nerve?

No cartoon villains. Weinstein, Ailes, O'Reilly, Clinton, Trump, etc. Plenty of real villains. Sure other places and institutions do. No argument from me there. But I think the political, entertainment, and financial centers are probably pretty filled to the brim with this sort of stuff. Why does that bother you for me to say?

Because your first move was to mention 3 institutions that are stock villains for the right, which is essentially a political judgement, instead of taking a more expansive structural view of the problem, which would seem to be more thoughtful and humane.

Of course I don't doubt that what you say is true, but it's only a corner of the picture. What touched a nerve was the apparent reflexiveness and myopia of your take.

our first lady (or is she the 2nd lady, i can't keep up with all the workings of this daycare) is married to one and you don't care

to be fair he agrees with his politics so as a republican he can't criticize him.

or he'll pretend all of the accusations against trump are most definitely bogus despite trump's words and actions that paint him as a textbook abuser. the mental gymnastics would be comical if it wasn't legitimately sad and pathetic.

I'm just wondering if there will be a shakedown of oNE of the liberal epicenter in America to ensure that poor defenseless woman are not being taken advantage of. I'm nit holding my breath though...

what exactly are you talking about?

you still watch fox news, don't ya?

Indeed. Just shows how difficult structural misogyny (and other forms of structural violence) are to overcome, even within ostensibly or putatively "progressive" spaces.

'Progressivism' is a farse. It's a cover for powerful people to seize control by taking advantage of emotional weak people. The leaders that espoused these beliefs do not believe.

You could substitute any -ism there, because any movement or ideological framework is ever in danger of cynical co-option. Progressive movements have their share of issues, for sure; but the progressive telos is leagues more valuable and valorizable than the regressive nonsense to which you subscribe.

Yeah because the progressive policies implemented in the last 30 years have really helped our society.

Like all other things liberal Hollywood is a hypocritcal joke. They knew about this forever while lecturing America about social justice issues. Pathetic.

That exchange between thethe and jpx is so representative of the things that make progressives and conservatives seem so much farther apart than we really are on most things. There's some profound statement waiting to be made there but I'm not articulate enough to make it.

FbI may now investigate this matter. Wonder if this is the opening of Pandoras box.

But please...lecture us all backwards trump supporters at the Oscars again this year.

Fox News is doing a segment on Harvey Weinstein and media hypocrisy ... it’s like they’ve never heard of Roger Ailes
