Has Gattis been a disappointment?

Obviously lots of disparate opinions on Gattis. I am not strongly on one side or the other. He is s solid hitter, and a marginal defender. You can get by with his defense if he is awesome offensively.

The reason I think he will be traded is the potential return. This team has a couple of big holes, and he is perhaps the best trading chip they have to improve in those other areas. While I would like to keep Gattis' bat, CB is an upgrade defensively, and whoever he gets traded for will be an upgrade offensively at another position. In addition, I am nervous about his ability to play regularly behind the dish without breaking down physically.

Sorry to see him go, but hope they can get a solid return.

Trade makes no sense to me, either. Defense hasn't been a problem for the team, for the most part. Yeah, it could stand to improve. But the Braves are losing more 3 - 1 then 10-3. With that in mind, trading offense when the team is starved for offense seems crazy.

A trade makes sense under certain scenarios.

Gattis is aging and injury prone, but also offensively talented and cheap.

If the Braves can move Gattis (presumably, to an AL team) for a blue chip return then it's a no-brainer and living with Bethancourt and Vet Catcher A for a season is palatable.

Otherwise, he isn't exactly hurting the team, and as previously mentioned, a Gattis/Bethancourt tandem is pretty damn good.

I hear you, mate. Truly. But can you think of a blue chip third baseman or center fielder that's likely to be available, AND to replace Gattis's production?

Agreed on the Gattis/Bethancourt team.

Based on what thethe said about Gattis I was expecting 70 HR's this season, so yes I'm disappointed.

Gattis' bad defense doesn't show up in the stat sheet because they are usually considered wild pitches but he's very poor at blocking pitches in the dirt, especially late in games. Its been a killer.

He needs to go. He's not that good defensively and he can't stay healthy. Need to hope this illness is not serious (career ending) and get him to the AL ASAP. Honestly I hope it's not relapse or something else coming back from his past to bite him caused by reckless teen behavior.

He probably comprimised his immune system with that reckless behavior which lasted well beyond his teen years.

Not really. There are worse defenders on this team that play a lot more than Gattis. His offense has more than made up for his "defense", which hasn't been as bad as people claim it to be. Some act like like he's somehow cost us a bunch of wins and that's silly.

Sure I trade Gattis if the return was right. Not sure what that return is.

Before he got hurt he had one the best first halfs for any catcher in the game. He was going the opposite way more than usual. He was hitting for power, but he was also hitting the ball all over the field. Offensively there aren't many catchers who compare to Evan. I am in favor of keeping him versus trading him.

Those that say his defense has cost us a bunch of games are flat out blind or stupid, at least if they're actually serious and honest. Further, some fans just don't like certain players and paint a picture that doesn't fit reality, etc.

Bowman's Twitter:

The #Braves haven't provided a Gattis update. But it seems they are testing about more than just strep throat.

Sounds like it's AIDS, just as I feared.

Kidney stones aside, Gattis has not been a disappointment in my eyes. He has exceeded my expectations to a degree. I know some people expected him to light the world on fire, but those people live in la la land.
