Here comes sunshine : spring training game 1

I don’t think they should just do away with the timer in the 9th, they should just expand the time limit. Or maybe have added time once a batter gets to two strikes for the entire game.

If it’s a 3-2 count in the 9th the clock should go away. Can’t let an important game end that way. And it will at some point.

Blake Burkhalter threw the eighth inning today, we drafted him last year with the comp pick for Freddie leaving. I went back and watched it on MLB.tv. Pretty intriguing. Fastball was 96-98, cutter was 91-92.

I’ve read a few prospect lists say he could be quick to the big leagues if we made him a full time reliever, but I remember Dana Brown and company saying last year the plan was to let him try to start. We’ll see if that’s still the plan.

Drake Baldwin, our third rounder last year, was catching him late today. Only had one at bat but hit a line drive to center field that was caught. 100.8 mph off the bat, hardest ball hit by a Braves play today - admittedly a low bar to clear with that awful lineup.

I thought about this- and I wonder if they'll solve for this issue at some point- but I don't think that makes sense as the solution. Would be like saying the play clock should be eliminated at the end of football games or the shot clock should no longer exist at the end of an important basketball game- gotta have the same rules on the last play as you do on the first play IMO. The easier solution is to just be aware of the rule and not have it be an issue.

My assumption is that as batters/pitchers/catchers get used to the pitch clock, we'll never see this happening anymore. This was the case in the minors- you had a couple pitch violations per game in the first week of implementation, but after the first month there were almost none.

The reality is the pitch clock works- 10% of AAA games went over three hours last year while the average MLB game was over three hours. It will be a good thing once we get used to it.

They increase the timer from 15 to 20 with men on base, so someone understands some instances call for different rules. I’m not claiming I have the answer, but there has to be a way to ensure some critical moment isn’t decided by an umpire looking to make headlines by calling a guy out for looking at the ground 1 second too long. And everyone knows there are umpires who think folks bought tickets to see them, and will make sure they are at the center of a spectacle.

In tennis there's a shot clock.

The umpire in the chair has the discretion of when to start the clock. The server must serve by 0.

So if there's a quick 2 shot point, the clock starts early. If there's a 40 shot rally, and the crowd is applauding, and players need a minute to breathe, the umpire has the discretion to not start the clock yet to give time for the moment.

football and basketball are ruled by clocks. Baseball has never been. Then Mandick decides to add a clock to a game with no clock to try and speed up a game with no clock deciding a game. I am all for not allowing guys to step out after every pitch.. grab their nuts, adjust batting gloves... grab nuts again... slap helmet then slowly climb back in after 20 seconds of playing with yourself... Same for a pitcher who has to walk around the mound after throwing a strike.. But the greatness of our game is the drama of the moment.. the fact that no game is over because a clock doesn't matter.. I think there is a balance that could be reached that moves the game along by cutting the BS down.. but there will be a time when a guys questions (rightfully so) a strike call and the ump then calls another strike because he didn't think the hitter got ready quick enough. I absolutely hate what ManDick is doing to the game and I am not someone who doesn't like progression. Soon, guys won't have to run after a homer... just bap flip and walk back to dugout. only allowed 2 foul balls after 2 strikes.. then you are out. Maybe they can put carnival targets around the park and if a batter can hit it, he is awarded first base the rest of the game and we don't have to waste time watching him bat. Or if a pitcher picks a guy off.. the inning is automatically over... or if an AB lasts over 1 minute, it is decided by a game of rock paper scissors and it a walk or a K depending... We could get down to 25 minute games and everyone can get back to tiktoking.

maybe grow the game by marketing stars better.. making games easier to watch and more accessable to fans regardless of where you live.. get rid of local tv deals and create a national that every team benefits from.. create a salary floor and cap to have more teams who can compete.. then make suttle rule changes like only 2 step outs in a single AB.. pitchers have a 30 second pitch clock with 2 timeouts per inning. (adjust after playing one season as needed).. ManDick is instead making this a stupid carnival game that won't increase any interest because if your team sucks, you still won't watch.

You make a lot of good points here. You should apply to MLB to become commish.

You sound like the voice of someone who loves baseball. Mandick has the voice of someone who loves money enough to kill the golden goose.

I think we can rest assured that no umpire is going to have to balls to make that call in game 7 of the World Series. Even these ****ty umps.

Come playoff time once we get to LCS they probably will just do away with clock. The advertisers will want longer games. More commercials

Angel and CB Bucknor definitely would love for this opportunity

Not when MLB scares them off of making that call before the playoffs start. I have a feeling MLB will sit down with them and make it clear that ending a playoff game in that matter is unacceptable.
