Here Comes The Heat...

I really don't get this move. I mean, I know Ogando wasn't going to bring back an impact prospect, but overall he was having a solid season. He had a bad June, so now he has no value at all??? He could just as easily had a solid July and been flipped for a LHP prospect with a pulse.

Not going to lose any sleep over this one. But still it seems like a dumb move.

my guess is that the FO is tired of making little impact trades like this. it is time to see if guys acquired are for real.

Given the glut of pitching now in the system, my guess is that's the case. Time for some of these guys to sink or swim. We've got tons of money to spend this winter, and can always send some of these guys back down if we think they can eventually stick (and sign veterans again). We've kinda run out of places to send "LHP prospects with a pulse" to take a look at. Some of the SPs are eventually going to prove they're not SP options but could be pen pieces rather than trade fodder.

Get some of the younger guys some experience now in case Vizcaino, Johnson, and Norris are traded and we have to fill those holes soon.

I'd think it's at least slightly likely that we're close to a trade for Ogando, and we're doing this to avoid him getting hurt/give us time to iron out the details of the trade, without hurting our bullpen by making him sit. No one wants another Grilli situation. Doubt he brings back anything of note, but the possibility is there.
 
Given his "stuff", there's always the chance (minimal as it is, of course) that Cabrera just needs to be tossed out there and told to "go get 'em - here's your shot". Seems to have worked for Alvarez so far. Krol and Cervenka have blossomed since they've been tossed into the fire as well.

I could see this.. however, there has to be another piece.. Ogando by himself wouldn't bring back a bad contract and a new rosin bag...
 
I guess this is to see if Mauricio can be serviceable enough to replace Viz. Or Shea going to close and seeing if Cabrera can be setup like Zumaya. Also probably means we're going to flip Viz soon.

This... I am quite sure they didn't DFA him without a definite idea of his value in the marketplace. They either have something in the works, or they asked around and found him to have negative value as a throw in or trade piece.

he has been good his last 10 games... 17 Ip only 6 walks and 6 hits.. 3 ER.. 17K.. Whip under 1

I think he might be like Touki and just learning to dial down the heat to gain some control.
 
This seems abrubt as hell in a vacuum (calling up a guy straight from AA with a 6 BB rate). Best guess is they want to get a read on Cabrera as a possible high-leverage reliever before they decide whether to trade Vizcaino. Another option is they're showcasing Cabrera on the biggest of stages. Finally, I could just be overthinking this and the FO is just kinda nuts.

welp, at least Cabrera gives us a prospect to root for out there, and lighting up the radar gun is always fun too! I hope he just says to hell with it and releases the hounds!

I highly doubt that. The front office is stuck in their ways of trying to find cheap veteran players and trade them later on for the coveted "prospect" because they think having 40 prospects will win in this league.
 
I know it's a standard part of being a fan to question the front office, but those guys tend to know the value of guys like Ogando and if there was nothing there and they wanted to take a look at Cabrera, what's the point of belaboring the issue. Let's remember that Ogando was a very late signee and given his past track record on the field, you would have thought that there would have been more interest throughout baseball last off-season. Curious to see where he ends up.

I agree, farm systems are terribly overrated nowadays.
