Heyman: Braves 'interested' in Cespedes

If Orioles sign Cespedes and let Chris Davis walk then they could be more likely to trade for Markakis as the money combined would still be less than Davis alone. Would have Ces in left and Markakis back in right. I would prefer this if it opened the door to reunite with Upton if AAV is similar for both players.

That is a good point on Markakis. I think we end up trading for a young power hitting RF somehow and Nick will have to be traded.

That would make it a little easier on O's fans. They were really not happy to see several of their key players leave via FA, Markakis being one of them. So to have him come back while picking up Cespedes as well would be something Baltimore could get behind.

Don't need to go back down the Upton road!!! He is lazy defensively, takes plays off out there, streaky as h**l with the bat. All in all a general malcontent. Should say a lot about off the field when a guy of his percieved talent can't find a home. Just say no to Upton!!!

Chris Davis going back to Baltimore. Have to believe this takes them out of the Cespedes chase.

I'm liking the Braves' chances for Cespedes/Upton more and more each day.

I would still think the Braves are a long shot for Cespedes . . . and I assume they'll continue their stance of not even doing due diligence on QO free agents (Upton). The realistic market for these two seems more like CWS, DET, LAA, and NYM. I think Upton will be the last man standing and most likely to be hurt by how the market plays out.

Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports that the massive seven-year, $161 million contract that Chris Davis agreed to with the Orioles is for less money than Yoenis Cespedes was seeking.

If that's true, I think Cespedes is in for a rude awakening. He's running out of places to play... especially places that will pay him that.

i change my mind

maybe Cespedes will get that 5/100 if the O's for no reason and bidding against themselves go up to 7/161 for his overrated ass

Capabilities aside, it's pretty clear that Heyward's age made him the most sought of the Cespedes/J. Upton/Heyward trio. I think Cespedes may be worth $22 MM AAV, but there's no way anyone should give him a six-year deal. I think the fear with Upton is, although he is younger than Cespedes, that he won't age well. One can argue that Heyward hasn't fully applied his tools, but there's no question of these three who has the best physical attributes.

With the Os now out, I DEFINITELY wouldn't hesitate to call Cespedes' and J-Up's representatives and say "I'll give you 5 years/90-$100 million with an opt-out following 2017, take it or leave it". That gives them the closest to what they're asking for in years and total dollars.

If they don't want that kind of security, take a pillow deal IF someone offers you one year for a higher AAV. Just make sure to have your agent call Ian Desmond's guys and ask them how he feels today after turning down $100 million.

I feel that if we sign Cespedes is not going to help the Braves on less we trade him during the trade deadline alot of people is here complaining about Markakis that's old but Cespedes is not much younger plus if we keep him we may have a better year and we may finish with a worst draft pick for next year. I think the Braves should tank all the way to try to get the first pick. I think the braves should try to get someone like Jonathan Lucroy next year and maybe Martin Prado for 2-3 years until Riley is ready. I think they should not give away any picks on the draft. Those picks you may have the chance to draft a upside pitcher for the backend of the rotation or someone for our bullpen specially with how expensive are the bullpen arms.

I want to nominate this as the best stream of consciousness posting I've seen here all winter. That first sentence is epic.

Y'know, this is kind of falling our way. The music is stopping soon...Cespedes for six years with an opt out? He would be a very nice piece. Ought to age well. I know he's older, but he looks in good shape to me. Athletic. It'd be nice if he were a tad more selective at the plate, but he checks all the rest of the boxes. He should still be plenty productive in 3 years when we start competing.

Once again, Olivera needs to play third for all this to work out. If he's really a .280/15 HR guy, he's not useful in LF. And if he can't play third, cut him or deal him.

Not sure I'd match Upton's deal - for him or Cedpedes to be honest. If they want the opt-out after two seasons, I just wouldn't go more than 5 years. The total AAV wouldn't really be the issue to me - if Yoenis wants the same dollars, I think I'd match the AAV at $22.5 million since Bourn and Swisher coming off the books will cover $29 million of the $112.5 million, If he opted out following 2017 he'd cost you roughly $8 million per if you allocate that $29 million to his deal without signing another OF.

Just think that if you even consider including opt-outs (which I've never been in favor of at all), you HAVE to draw a line in the sand somewhere. If I'm going to give the player the chance to go back out on the market at 32 years old, I'm not paying him when he's older than 35.

The Braves will really be needing another bad contract soon. Kind of miss the old days here when somebody would feel the urge to enlighten the forum about a "sunk cost."
