How good is this team really?

Some of you need to open your damn eyes. This team has two great defensive players, one pretty good one, and the rest is complete awfulness.

Love the optimism and this is a good collection of perceived talent, but it is a mile from being a good team. No aspect of the team is measuring up last year. 80-90 wins is all they have in them and it won't be enough.

At least they've got plenty things to work on, unlike last year when everything just seemed to go our way.

I was referring to the team defense. But most people do judge the team unfairly after they are on a losing skid. Claiming the team is garbage, etc. It's usually what you do every night.
The defense isn't very good though. Winning or losing.

18th in errors coming into tonight. It's not necessarily the errors, but there are plenty of plays that aren't made that don't result in errors.

And we judge that with advanced stats like UZR which the Braves currently rank 4th in. The Braves defense has sucked really bad for the last few games. It's an aberration.

That doesn't change the fact that we have one not so great and two very bad catchers defensively speaking. Second base problems are well-documented, and left and center leave much to be desired. Things obviously can't get any worse than the Boston series, though.

BJ is not as bad as a fielder as he may have looked the last couple days.

And if I had to guess I'd say Justin is about average.

Neither Upton seems to be able to use their speed to make plays in the outfield that the good oufielders make. I don't know enough about these defensive metrics to say if they confirm this impression or contradict it.

Someone posted that BJ is like the 4th or 5th best CF in the game in overall ratings. Kind of surprised me.

With UZR Heward is 1st among RFers, BJ is 9th among CFers, and Justin is 5th among LFers. DRS is a little different with Heyward still being 1st, BJ tied for 6th, and Upton 11th. Just by the eyeball test DRS would seem to be more accurate. Sometimes the Upton brothers look bad and they have on regularity the past week but overall they do not suck out there. People tend to only remember the bad plays though.

As far as other positions go Simmons is 4th in DRS and Johnson is next to last. DRS and UZR don't accurately measure the total defensive value for 1B and C so I'm not going to bother with those two. But it does put Freeman and Gattis in the negative range. But until they can incorporate scooping balls and pitch framing it's not going to be that accurate.

And according to statcorner Gattis is above average in pitch framing like he was last year.
