How is this garbage supposed to compete in 2-3 years?

I don't understand your second point... the only trades I don't make are bringing in Fried, Smith and Newcomb... but I keep Simmons, Wood, JUpton and Peraza... how is that not better for the future?

So you're getting rid of Heyward for Shelby? What zero is playing CF? I would've LOVED your reaction if we traded Heyward for Shelby and signed Markakis to replace him for a team looking to compete. Oh my lord.
And how are we getting Donaldson, again? What fairy tale scenario are we dreaming up here?

Not sure if you read my post - but yes. And no I wouldn't have liked it but my biggest beef was not investing in ONE of those two players.

So yes, I could have been sold on the Heyward trade, as Markakis/Shelby combination was a decent exchange. But that's irrelevant to my point.

I just outlined an entire scenario where we could have put a winning product on the field and still be set up for the future... Not only that - but we would have been BETTER suited with JUP, Wood, and Peraza instead of Mallex, Fried, and Olivera. Then you predictably starting throwing your insults.

I don't know if Donaldson could have been had - but I do know we could have beaten the package that Oakland got for him. Again - you asked for a scenario in which we could compete and people have given them to you.

Anyways - it's moot now. We traded away 7 young good players in hopes that the prospects become as good as them.

oh, ok.
I would've traded for Donaldson.
Traded for Jose Bautista.
Traded for Posey.
BOOM. We're competing. Still have no pitching, but screw it.
When you can make up fairy tale scenarios, it's really easy.
Can you list the 7 good young players? I count Heyward, Upton, and Simmons - two of which were set to become FAs after one year. And if you try to compete and fail (as we would've, very clearly with any rational thought), you're screwed.
Please tell me the package you're putting together for Donaldson. You slated in Peraza at 2B so I assume he's not in it - so who is? Albies? Sims?
People haven't given me that. I don't believe those teams could compete. You can assume the best of absolutely every scenario when you're projecting for a professional baseball franchise. I understand it's very to do on an internet message board, but not in real life like you seem to think. Easy when there's no risk and you can just make stuff up.

The team will be drastically different by this time next year.. just look at the 25 man roster, here is my opinion on chances of guys still here this time next year...

FF/Flowers/Viz/Ender/Mallex/Wisler/Withrow all have about an 80% + chance of being on the team next year..

Nick/JT/Jace/Ogando/Perez/Adonis/Castro/Cervenka all have around 50% chance IMO

Beckham I am not sure.. I think he has a shot at utility bench guy if he has a good season

Aybar/Frenchy/KJ/AJ/Stubbs/Norris/Chacin/Grilli/EOF/JJ have zero chance... they will either retire, be cut or be traded before spring of next year.

so IMO, there are about 7 guys who have a good shot at being on this team next year..8 if you throw in Winkler and he is healthy.. So saying, how can we make this garbage good isn't the right question.

Ummm why is everyone so quick to want to trade chacin. He's a good mor starter why not RE up him or at least try to

because Chacin is a trade chip. We have MOR guys to replace him that don't hold the same value he will at the deadline. So Blair/Ellis/Gant/Whalen/Sims/Jenkins/Newcomb/Folty could all become MOR + pitchers as soon as next year... however, none of them alone would hold the same value in a trade at the deadline as Chacin, assuming that he is still pitching the way he is pitching.. MLB ready pitchers will always carry more weight.

Chacin is a free agent at the end of the year, I would say that Julio Teheran would have a much better value given he is signed through 2020 at a decent price. I would rather extend Chacin at a lower price tag and take what value I can get from Teheran, as I see them as very similar pitchers

Just so we are clear, you realize not trading JUp means he would have walked this past offseason and all the Braves would have gotten was a compensation pick, right? The Braves made a half-hearted effort to sign him, but they were so short compared to the Tigers they didn't even make a formal offer. Absolutely nothing financially would have changed in your scenario, so they wouldn't have him past 2015 even if they didn't trade him.

So you think having JUp last year and a compensation pick would have better positioned this team than what they got from SD?

Assuming Teheran returns to form, you trade them both. Plus Grilli, Johnson (both), Viz, Markakis, and even Freeman if he returns to form enough to bring back a reasonable return.

The reason why is that Teheran is a MOR starter who has pitched a bit better than that and a bit worse than that at times. He's not a TOR starter but has value assuming he returns to form because of his contract. Chacin is a MOR starter or worse depending on how he's going. Those type guys can be had any offseason. Markakis won't be around when the team gets good or if he is he will be so old as to be a drag instead of an add.

And finally, Freeman. He's being paid like he's the face of the franchise but he doesn't play that way. He has an injury that is concerning for a 1B and has been known to rob power, an area where Freeman wasn't especially great (compared to traditional 1B) even before the injury. His salary is big but not crazy and if a team is willing to take on his LH bat and contract for a decent price, I think a rebuilding team would be crazy not to trade him.

In my scenario, we still have Wood and Peraza because we don't make the trade for the old man

Also, if we refuse to spend money on good players, we're going to have to do a lot of rebuilts in the coming years.

I really wish folks would wait for us to actually sign him before projecting his timetable!

Sorry, Rico. Since this thread included lots of unrealistic fantasy, I thought it would be fun to throw in some silliness. I do hope the Braves sign him, and actually think they will. If so, I hope he's as good as advertised. Way to early to project, though. For every Harper, there's a Kominsk or three.
