I didn’t vote for Trump but I’m cautiously optimistic

Another deflection.

Ho hun

I'm not worried about the IRS getting me. I pay my taxes, per US law.

The illegal criminals dont bother. Why should they? They have you to defend their criminality
it must be hard to live with that much anxiety

the IRS is gonna make me a criminal

nsacpi wants to burn LA down to the ground

our kids are being ruined by people like nsacpi

give it a rest

We got to this stage of the argument because the academic who cannot think asserted that the illegal criminals who have been here 5 years, and have committed no other crimes, should be allowed to stay. He also said the illegal criminals who commit other crimes should be deported

I point out that they have evaded federal taxes, breaking US law.

But all the sudden, the academic has changed his perspective, back to defending their right to be here and break our laws

What a shocker there!

eh...the approach I've taken was once Republican mainstream. And it remains the best option. I put up a clip of Kasich advocating the same thang. Newt Gingrich (that radical lefty) took a similar position in a presidential debate. Dunno if he has changed his tune. Ronald Reagan (another radical lefty bent on destroying America) signed such an amnesty bill.

Of course I don't want just to appeal to authority. There are other reasons for doing this. One is pragmatism. It is not extreme. It does not cause dislocations to society. A second is self-interest. The dirty little secret is undocumented migrants provide thangs Americans want and are willing to pay for. There is an exploitative element sometimes. But the exploiter and beneficiary is an American. Thirdly, there is a humanitarian and ethical aspect. I won't say more about that since it is self evident.

In opposition to the above I see arguments that are fevered dreams about Sharia Law, invasions, occupations. It is nonsense. Immigrants (legal and illegal) collectively add a great deal to the economy and our culture. They make our food better. They make our music better. Enjoy. Bon appetit and all that jazz.

Undocumented migrants account for 5% of the workforce. I once thought that even Trump would not be stupid enough to try to deport them all. But the tariffs nonsense is starting to change my mind. There appears to be no limit to his stupidity.

in the course of this argument, have you evolved your position from where you were yesterday?

Yes. If they committed a crime they should be deported.

Because US law says undocumented workers are required to report their income above $13,850, according to section 6012. I'm making an assumption (a pretty good one, I think), that the vast majority of income is not reported. That is committing a crime.

Have you changed your position from yesterday?

eh...no my position hasn't evolved...it is true that (except for those who follow the letter of the law by surrendering to a border agent and announcing a claim of asylum) undocumented migrants are breaking the law...as are those who overstay visas...my point is if they have been here five years or more, have otherwise lived productive law-abiding lives, they should be eligible for amnesty and a pathway to citizenship

you need to go to a Hispanic Festival this summer...enjoy the food and music...dance with your lady...make some new friends...no one wants to hurt you or anyone else

btw if your main concern is that they are not paying taxes, the best way to solve that problem is to regularize their status and allow them to obtain a tax id number...simple and pragmatic...much more sensible than mass deportations...but something makes me think that immigrants paying taxes is not your main concern...even you should be able to see that if this is the problem there is a simpler and better solution than mass deportations

I spent plenty of time during the Fiesta celebration this year. Great tacos and margaritas.

But glad to know you bo longer care about criminality. You support their ability to get a free ride while American citizens foot the tax bill

It still remains lost on you why opponents are increasing.

uncurious academics are useless

I'm glad to hear that. Enjoy all the good thangs the world has to offer.

As for my not caring about criminality, I think it is no exaggeration to say that I am the most consistently law and order person here. I'm against defunding ICE and the IRS. Many of you have expressed pleasure at seeing the IRS get defunded. This will greatly facilitate and increase law-breaking. Which makes me think that law and order is not your priority. Or fiscal health. Since defunding the IRS also damages our fiscal situation. I guess some thangs are more important than reducing crime and restoring fiscal balance. This is one of the dangers of being an ideologue. It robs you of your common sense. Whether that ideology is Marxism or Libertarianism.

I would be thrilled with reducing the revenue service in partnership with major spending cuts

I am not thrilled that American citizens are forced to pay taxes but illegal criminals are not

then allow undocumented workers to get a tax id number

simple solution

much better solution than mass deportations
how about we fine them for all backdated taxes plus the penalty for being late - like we would American citizens - and if they refuse, we deport them for their tax evasion - like we would jail American citizens?

Sure. I'm not opposed to requiring back taxes be paid. I'm a law and order guy. Just not looking for excuses to mass deport hard-working law-abiding people.

Apply the law impartiality. The answer is easy for those of us with a sincere belief in law and order. The issue of people not filing or not paying is not unique to undocumented migrants.

its not unique to illegal criminals but they have more leeway in breaking that law than American citizens do
