I miss Chipper

Remember when Mets fans said David Wright's floor was Chipper. :Bunchie1:

Wright was great for a couple of years.
But it goes to show how insanely hard it is to be as consistently productive as Chipper was for so long. It doesn't happen often and is very special when it does.

The fact that Chipper was so good from both sides of the plate probably helped him quite a bit. A lot tougher to neutralize with late inning relief

A little perspective on just how good he was:

His average season slash line was .303/.401/.529 (930 OPS). His AVERAGE slash line over 19 seasons.

I don't think the Braves have had a 900+ OPS in the lineup since he retired.

Makes me more dissapointed to know if he didn't go through that injury stretch for a few seasons in the early 2000's, he would have pissed on 3K hits and 500 HRs...but still glad with what we got.

Here is my favorite perspective on Chipper. In the history of baseball, there have been six - SIX - players with 450 doubles, 450 home runs, 1500 runs, 1500 RBI, and who slashed .300/.400/.500 for their career.

Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Stan Musial, Ted Williams.....and Chipper Jones.

Edit: as of last year, Albert Pujols is the seventh.

Sad part is, if his legs and shoulder would have just held up, that 500 HR, 3000 hit plateau was so close. And yes, there will be guys not vote for him on first ballot because he did not reach those numbers. Same crowd that don't think Murph belongs in the Hall.

Love Murph, but he is nowhere close to the same category of Baseball tier as Chipper.

Oh I agree. Wasn't comparing the two directly. Point I am making is there will be people that hold that against Chipper that he did not reach those levels. It will be same group that say comparing Murph to his peers of the '80's that his numbers just don't measure up even though he is top-10 in nearly offensive category in the '80s. Not to mention great defense. The Hall's standards are a bit ridiculous at times with certain guys.

They are. The one that puzzles me is Fred McGriff. He didn't have any/many grand signature moments, but he was extraordinarily productive and consistent over a fifteen year period- and a clean player. I think that makes him harder to evaluate, as several guys were putting up those kind of numbers. not clean, though.

What kills Murph is the same thing that will kill Andruw. HOF peak but an abrupt drop off in production will kill any chance you have. As good as he was he is not a HOFer. Chipper is a HOFer and while some may not vote for him because he didn't reach 3K hits or 500 homers he will still get voted in on the frst try.

Andruw was arguably the greatest defensive player of all time in CF. If he doesn't get in, i'd be shocked. It isn't as if his offensive prowess was nonexistent. For 10 years, he was a MONSTER.

Got my copy of MLB the Show 15. Thinking about creating Chipper as my character I use in the Road to the Show mode. Gonna be pissed if they trade mme though.
