Ian Anderson's stuff

I think it's a great idea, actually—especially if Hamels is more willing to sign such a deal with the Braves, given that he wasn't able to make good on his 2020 contract with them.

Honestly, I think it would have to be a minor league contract. And even then, it's insurance, you can't have too much pitching, etc. I'd almost rather count on Wilson, who had one more good start.

I realize this will not make people happy to hear, but the facts are:

Anderson posted 1.9 WAR over 130 IP in 2021.

Anderson’s xwOBA was .316 in 2021.

That is the exact definition of a #3/#4 SP.

If the others in the rotation stay healthy, that's right where he will slot in anyway. No shame in being a solid 3/4 behind Fried, Morton, and (hopefully) Soroka.

That's probably fine if Soroka is healthy.

What this does tell me is AA should sell high if some team calls and values Ian as something more than a solid middle of the rotation guy. Obviously I don’t want to trade Ian since he is immensely valuable to us and for rotation stability, but if someone valued him higher I’d be interested in exploring that.

I would be perfectly comfortable with Ian in he mid rotation spot until; one of the multitude of prospects moves ahead of him in the rotation and until he becomes to expensive thru arbitration (if arbitration is an issue going forward).

Yeah, pass on that one.

I'll take the guy who put up "the definition of a #3" as a rookie every day and twice on Sundays. He might have peaked as a rookie, but also maybe he hasn't. Probably depends on whether he ever really gets ahold of his command.

FYI, Max Fried had a .317 xwOBA the year he lost his rookie eligibility. Also I don't xwOBA for pitchers anyway since it is set to a hitting stat reference point and isn't really any more predictive for pitchers than raw FIP. We could at least complain about his SIERA or xFIP or something (which would probably similarly pour cold water on Anderson).

I feel Anderson has a bit more refining of command left in the tank in his career progression.

Doubt the stuff upticks at all but his ability to tunnel his pitches mitigates the non elite spin on his breaking ball. However with his ability to prevent proper pitch recognition from his pitching slot I think an uptick in command could allow him to make a big jump in performance.

It’s fine regardless. A cost controlled middle of the rotation mainstay is incredibly valuable.

I was crucified for saying after we drafted Anderson that barring him picking up another plus pitch that he had a ceiling of a middle of the rotation starter. A reliable #3 is a very valuable thing to have and you'll see some get given ridiculous contracts this offseason. I was just disappointed we drafted a guy so high who didn't have ace potential.

It really is a shame his curve is so weak. If he had a hammer curve he'd be elite.

He didn't look elite that day, but I'm still in shock that he threw 5 no hit innings in the World Series.

That's not really what you said though.

i personally crucified him for saying Anderson had major control issues when he clearly does not. his control is far from elite but it’s clearly not an issue in him being a very effective major league pitcher
