If I were Braves GM

What 3B fits that bill? Or 2B even. CF we can't really replace Bossman and be a better team for it.

I think what everyone is geting at is there is a good chance that's another albatross FA contract on a team that can't handle the ones it has already

Maybe he is. Maybe he isn't. As long as we avoid going too long of acontract it won't be a problem.

I like the Edwin Jackson swap depending on the rest of the deal. I could live with him as our 5th starter/long reliever. Easier to deal with then BJ in the lineup or bench.

We could always offer Wade Boggs a contract. Seriously, and I will get some grief for making this shift of opinion, Kubitza needs to get a long look. He strikes out, but he was second in the SL in OBP.

I'd rather try to play small ball with Gosselin or give Kubitza again then have CJ back on the team. Wren really screwed us there.

Not hardly. Johnson didn't sign away any of his free agent years. He had a big offensive dropoff in 2014, but if you take a peek at his DEFENSE, you will see that he was within one error of being the best defensive third baseman in the league. Compared to the Uggla/BJ f-ups, this was small potatoes.

Errors are a terrible way to measure defense. A severe lack of range has a lot to do with his lack of errors. Make no mistake Chris Johnson was among the worst defensive 3B's in all of baseball.

I'm on this bandwagon. I love Headley's potential, but I'd much rather see this team going after OBP, speed, and defense. Headley adds power potential. We have that in spades. We need guys getting on base and getting in.

OBP, speed and defense? Sounds like Chase Headley...

Not the first time I've been accused of watching a different game than others.

Looks like the Cards will also potentially be unloading an OFer. From MLBTR:

•Strauss figures the Cardinals are likely to trade an outfielder this offseason, with Matt Holliday locked into the left field spot and Taveras, Jon Jay, Peter Bourjos, Randal Grichuk and prospect Stephen Piscotty all in the mix for the other two outfield spots.

Jon Jay would slot in well on the Braves roster. I have zero idea what it would take to get him though.

I sure would like the GMTBNL to try!

He really wasn't this year though. Lonnie chisenhall and Nick Castellanos were worse in both UZR and DRS. Conor Gillaspie and Luis Valbuena have been as bad or worse than him. He sucked massively in DRS, and was bleh in UZR. UZR had this as his best season.

Yea not sure what he would take but Jay would be a nice fit.

It's just common sense. A guy with no range will make less errors because he doesn't get to very much. Do you think all the SS's that had less errors than Simmons are better defensive shortstops than him? I doubt it...

Like I said, among the worst defensive 3B's in all of baseball. It's sad that this year's UZR is his best. At least with Castellanos and Chisenhall you can say they made some plays outside of their zone I guess. CJ is literally the worst when it comes to making a play on a ball that is hit to his left or right. I'm just not a fan of having a statue at 3B. I'd rather have someone that butcher's a ball that Simmons might be able to snag then someone just letting balls through cleanly.

Another couple of potential trade targets to add to the list are Niese and Colon from the Mets. The Mets might deal from their SP depth so they can afford to upgrade their OF and/or SS. Colon is old and only signed for 2015, so he might come pretty cheap. Niese is controlled through 2017 at pretty decent salaries, so he will probably cost Peraza plus a little more.

Alex Rios was just informed his option would not be picked up, so he might be an option for RF. He is certainly not a great option, but I would expect him to put up a ~750 OPS and play average to slightly below average defense in RF. If he came cheap on a 1-2 year deal he might be acceptable. He is pretty far down the list of guys I would like to see in the Braves OF next year, but clearly an upgrade offensively.

The O's just declined their half of the option they held on Nick Markakis, so add him to the list of potential OFers the Braves should target. Assuming he isn't offered a QO (and it doesn't look like he will be since the O's declined his $17M option in favor of a $2M buyout), his career .358 OBP (.364 vs RHers, .344 vs LHers) would look pretty good at the top of the Braves lineup.

He will probably end up being too expensive for the Braves budget (~3yr/$40M), but a top 5 of Heyward, Markakis, Justin, Freddie, and Gattis would be a nice start. I would expect Aoki to put up very similar OBP to Markakis over the next 2-3 years and be much cheaper (by over half), so I would rather see the Braves target him instead.

As it currently stands, I would rank my preferences on OFers based on cost/performance as:

1. Aoki
2. Fowler
3. Markakis
4. Hunter
5. Rios (he would have to come cheap to even be an option though)

Curious little note about Markakis. He flew up the draft boards the year he was drafted and from what I've been told, the Braves were hoping he would fall to them. One thing though. Braves wanted him as a pitcher and not a hitter.
